A magazine is a box that is removable from the gun and holds ammo. It's ether metal or plastic and completely surrounds the ammo. You can usually only see the top one or two rounds.
A clip is used to feed ammo into (usually) an internal magazine. It's usually just a thin band of metal that just holds the rim of the cartridges.
The Kel-Tec pistol aside, the vast majority of modern firearms use magazines.
Clip-fed pistols are pretty rare. The C96 Mauser is one. There are a few others that are even more obscure.
A lot of older military rifles used clips (sometimes called chargers).
