Sure, one only has to look back to WW2 to see that for the defending states, isolationism really would not ave worked; it was only through coordination & alliance that WW2 was won. Now that is an extreme example, but generally, partly due to the 'security dilemma' (see wikipedia article), coming to an accommodation (alliance) with neighbours can be security enhancing as expense & focus on security can be on the 'real' threats not on the apparent threats
