Thailand zet Oeigoeren ondanks protest na 10 jaar detentie uit naar China
Een groep van tientallen Oeigoeren die al tien jaar vastzit in Thailand is uitgezet naar China. Mensenrechtenexperts van de VN waarschuwden de Thaise regering recent nog dat ze in China het risico lopen slachtoffer te worden van mensenrechtenschendingen, waaronder marteling. De Oeigoeren vormen een overwegend islamitische minderheid in China die zwaar wordt onderdrukt.
De Thaise minister van Defensie, Phumtham Wechayachai, heeft bevestigd dat er veertig Oeigoeren naar China zijn gedeporteerd. Volgens hem heeft Thailand van China de garantie gekregen dat ze goed behandeld zullen worden.
Het Chinese staatspersbureau Xinhua berichtte vanochtend al dat tientallen Chinezen die Thailand illegaal waren binnengegaan overgebracht waren naar China. Dat zou "in lijn met de wetten van beide landen" zijn gedaan. Volgens China gaat het om jihadisten maar daarvoor is geen enkel bewijs geleverd.
Premier Paetongtarn Shinawatra liet eerder op de dag nog in het midden of ze waren uitgezet. Ze zei in een reactie alleen dat "internationale standaarden en mensenrechten" moeten worden gevolgd.
Afgeplakte ramen
Op beelden van Thaise media is te zien dat er midden in de nacht meerdere vrachtwagens met afgeplakte ramen vertrokken bij het detentiecentrum in Bangkok waar de Oeigoerse mannen vastzaten. In de vroege ochtend vertrok een ongeplande vlucht van China Southern Airlines van de Don Mueang-luchthaven in de hoofdstad; het toestel landde volgens data van Flightradar24 zes uur later in Kashgar, in de regio Xinjiang, waar veel Oeigoeren vandaan komen.
De Oeigoeren maakten deel uit van een grotere groep die ruim tien jaar geleden China ontvluchtte. Ze werden in 2014 opgepakt en voor onbepaalde tijd vastgezet. Een deel van de groep werd al teruggestuurd naar China, anderen naar Turkije en de rest zat sindsdien vast. Een aantal van hen is in gevangenschap overleden. De omstandigheden waaronder de Oeigoeren vastzitten in Thailand is mogelijk een schending van het internationaal recht, oordeelden VN-mensenrechtenexperts vorig jaar.
Als er inderdaad veertig mensen zijn uitgezet zouden er nog acht Oeigoeren vastzitten in Thailand. De 48 Oeigoeren deden vorige maand nog een publieke oproep om te voorkomen dat ze zouden worden gedeporteerd; ze waarschuwden dat ze in China in de gevangenis belanden, ook vreesden ze voor hun leven. Een aantal van hen was in hongerstaking gegaan.
Afgelopen jaren hebben mensenrechtenorganisaties en internationale media tal van rapporten en onderzoeken gepubliceerd over de onderdrukking van Oeigoeren in China. Ze zitten massaal vast in wat China 'opleidingscentra' noemt. Op basis van getuigenissen is duidelijk geworden dat het strafkampen zijn waar ernstige mensenrechtenschendingen plaatsvinden. Slachtoffers spraken over dwangarbeid, verkrachtingen, martelingen en gedwongen sterilisaties.
