One of the finest and best-preserved examples of ancient Roman engineering, the Aqueduct of Segovia in Spain stands as a monumental testament to the ingenuity and precision of Roman construction techniques. Built during the late 1st or early 2nd century CE, likely under the reign of Emperor Trajan or possibly Hadrian, this aqueduct was designed to transport water from the Frío River, located nearly 10 miles (17 kilometers) away, to the city of Segovia.
What makes the structure particularly remarkable is that it was constructed without the use of mortar, relying solely on the precise cutting and placement of approximately 24,000 massive granite blocks quarried from the nearby Guadarrama Mountains. The stones were expertly stacked and interlocked, creating a seamless system capable of withstanding the test of time and natural forces for nearly two millennia.
The most iconic portion of the aqueduct, located in the heart of Segovia, stretches an impressive 2,388 feet (728 meters) and features 165 arches, many of which soar to heights exceeding 30 feet (9 meters)—with the highest central arches towering around 93 feet (28 meters) above ground level. This double-tiered arcade, once hidden among urban sprawl, now commands attention as a centerpiece of the city’s historic core.
Not only was the aqueduct vital in supplying fresh water to the Roman settlement, but it also served as a symbol of imperial power and urban sophistication. Despite centuries of exposure to weather, seismic activity, and even deliberate dismantling during the Moorish occupation, it has remained structurally intact—thanks largely to the masterful balance and weight distribution engineered by its original Roman builders.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, the Aqueduct of Segovia continues to awe visitors with its scale, endurance, and architectural harmony. It’s more than just a conduit for water—it's a living reminder of Rome’s enduring legacy in civil engineering and urban planning.

Research shows green tea helps prevent cognitive decline.
New research from Kanazawa University has found a strong link between green tea consumption and fewer white matter lesions in the brains of older adults.
These lesions, often a sign of small vessel disease, are associated with cognitive decline and dementia. The study analyzed data from over 8,700 participants aged 65 and older in Japan. They found that those who drank three or more glasses of green tea daily had significantly fewer white matter lesions, with the most avid tea drinkers showing a 6% reduction compared to those who drank two glasses or less.
Interestingly, coffee consumption showed no such effect. While the exact mechanisms are still being investigated, researchers believe the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties of green tea catechins may be protecting the brain from vascular damage. This adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that green tea offers a range of health benefits, particularly for brain health as we age. Studies have shown that regular green tea consumption can enhance memory and attention, potentially boosting overall cognitive performance.
The neuroprotective effects of green tea may also help lower the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. And if that wasn't enough, green tea also contains L-theanine, an amino acid known to promote relaxation and reduce stress, contributing to improved mood and mental well-being.
