Here's a story.
My father was a cop/detective for 30 years, from the 1950s into the 1980s. He was old enough to be my grandpa. I was born when he was 52.
He dies in the early 2010s. My older half-brother and I have to deal with his estate. His estate is a messy trailer with random stuff, a 1970s' snub-nose revolver, and a ton of hollow points. Since I'm the only one that grew up with him, I know where all of it is. His gun, his bullets. My brother is like, "all that is illegal" and I'm like, "yeah, but here's where it is".
So we collect his gun that is so old to be illegal, and his illegal hollow points, and bring it to a police station. We're like, "this is our father's, what do we do?"
The police officer was super cold at first. Asks us a ton of questions, sticks us in a room. And we're there for like 20 minutes.
And then the police officer comes back after running everything to make sure it's not wanted, acts like an excited schoolboy, and is like, "Omfg this thing is awesome! It's a snub-nose from the fucking 1970s. A classic! If you give it to us we have to destroy it. Which is horrible because all of us literally want it. It's so fucking cool. Are you sure you don't want it? We'd love you to have it so we don't have to destroy it."
But both my brother and I were in different states, and without licenses at the time (unlike now), so we were like, "nah, sorry."
So that's how my father's revolver went out. Being fanboyed over by cops decades later. It felt right.

What are your favorite guns for someone who is not a big gun enthusiast but is passionate about self defense?
Like, you aren't optimizing for a zombie apocalypse but you want your wife to be able to pick up the gun and defend the house from intruders if need be, and the gun's maintenance levels have been maybe questionable but it's reliable enough to still probably work reliably and she can wield it.

I don’t think interactions need to only be about transacting value. And making your presence known is also valuable to me for discoverability.
But you’re entitled to prefer no interaction to likes… I prefer likes to no interaction and then absolutely am very very grateful for zaps. ⚡️

Legacy social media is abuzz with the news that Twitter is partnering with Visa to enable peer-to-peer payments. To the inexperienced, Twitter embracing the value for value model could seem like a positive step. However, there's more meat to this story. Twitter has a history of censoring users. Why would anyone want their money to be subject to the same censorship as their communications? Better solutions exist.

Someone can like something but not find it valuable enough to zap; and at least for me likes have become a way to discover people who saw and interacted with my notes, and it was the first spark to check out who those people were.
Still love zaps, and have different reaction to likes vs zaps, but I enjoy having the option to make myself present in someone’s notification via like so they know someone saw what they threw out into the ether.
Different degrees of interaction imo.

For a few years now I've been of the opinion that epigenetics is likely a better explanation of adaptation and evolution, more so than "random mutation". Especially given that it has been demonstrated to reinforce in populations where multiple generations are subjected to the same pressures. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that there's also a feedback between the epigenetic mechanisms and the encoding (not just expression) of genes.

Endophytes as Subroutines

Fungi that live in plants can actively determine under what conditions its host-plant can grow or thrive.
If we swap out the endophytes (fungal/bacterial) of a plant that grows in salty soils for the endophytes used by plants thriving in hot geothermal soils then that plant can no longer thrive in salty soils. But it can now grow in hot geothermal soils and vice versa.
This, in my view, is more about epigenetics (the study of heritable traits, or a stable change of cell function, that happen without changes to the DNA sequence) than anything else.
Plants, animals and more are communities of genetically unrelated entities that forge a platform that is able to thrive for the benefit of all involved. Or, so it would seem. One thing is certain: The plant living in salty soil is able to do so not because of it's own genetics but because of it's interaction with a completely different genome.
