Apparently TikTok decided to disable all accounts associated with Americans, not just use in the US. I had to delete the app and reinstall it creating a new user in order to get back in from NZ. It’s weird because I’m pretty sure the account I was using was created in after I moved to NZ three years ago. Anyway. I’m back in and TikTok is now free from the influence of Americans.

So weird. A bunch of American TikTokers are fleeing the site ahead of its potential ban to an app called, Xiaohongshu or Little Red Book from China created by a guy named Charlwin Mao. Its terms of service state users must uphold socialist and Chinese values. But also Mao is a Stanford business and Bain Capital alum. So clearly as silicon valley as it gets in addition to being very Chinese too.
Just goes to show that social dynamics are as important to how these apps grow as the tech itself.

TikTok is much better if you use it in a country where they haven’t enabled the crazy home shopping network functionality. This is kind of like Amazon where they found a business model that makes so much money they can’t stop as it destroys the central value proposition of their platform.

Have you read all the studies by experts? Ive read enough of them that I can usually detect good studies from bad ones. The studies (not that book) are what matter.
Yes, I trust subject matter experts who spend their lives trying to get to the truth. As a gay man who came out at the height of the AIDS pandemic, experts liked those saved lives like mine. I’d probably be dead if it weren’t for people like that.
But I’ve read And The Band Played On - so I see how horrible it is when those experts aren’t funded and when they’re ignored.

Trump won’t actually make any real changes to section 230 just like he won’t change or repeal the ACA. Too much of the system depends on the way 230 works now. If you change it so platforms can’t remove or prioritize the content as they see fit then either the platforms become unusable due to spam and scams.

People have forgotten how devastating the constant boom & bust economy was in the 17 & 1800s, so they don’t understand how #TheFed is better.
People have forgotten how horrible autocratic governments are (because they stopped being interested in what’s happening around the world), so they can’t see the danger in the #politicians they elect.
With the GOP fully in charge next year, I’m expecting a big change back to sanity in 2026. At least that’s my hope. Maybe I’m just too big of an optimist.

NYC doesn’t have nearly the issues with the homeless/unhoused that the rest of the nation has. The reason is we have a right to shelter almost no one else has. The City has to provide shelter even if you’re an undocumented alien shipped here by a red state. While we have some free public toilets - it’s the right to shelter that makes the biggest difference.

We have free public toilets across New Zealand. Part is we don’t have the homeless problem as the US has. The other counter to this narrative is that there are lots of pay public toilets in the US, I know Portland and San Francisco have paid public toilets today.

Breitbart doesn’t have a clue what we liberals think. It would be more accurate to say most liberals think Biden should never have run for a 2nd term. I really like Harris, but what we needed was a full primary process — it would have produced a better candidate - even if that candidate was Harris. Sadly it’s a political process and those were the politics of the moment.

I would say fear and hatred won yesterday. All the anti-trans stuff wasn’t exactly misogyny, and definitely not about racism.
The pandemic (and a fair amount of corporate greed) caused inflation. A lot of that’s on Trump. Biden actually got it back down near the 2% Fed target. But the way inflation works - prices don’t go back down when the inflation is over. Consumer confidence and spending are back up - so saying the election was about inflation is just wrong.
And (sadly) no one really cares about the wars - Americans aren’t dying. So not about that either.
It was just about fear and hate. Which is really sad.

I think most of it is very easy to implement in Nostr but the real layer which is missing is a way for machine learning to pick which notes to display based on user activity and engagement. That’s buildable and a lot easier/cheaper than it was when TikTok or even IG reels were developed. But we have no way to bundle up user engagement data and send it to a trusted algorithm service. We could do a DVM or custom relay to display the content based on the algorithm service.
The other issue to address is that TikTok and its clones are very optimized for performance with incredible low latency uptime. You need a good CDN and really optimized clients.

I’ve got a long layover in Barcelona and I was looking for a taxi to go in to the city. The signs all say AMB instead of Taxi. Apparently AMB is an acronym for the city administration which regulates the taxis, amongst other things.
But nobody knows this arriving at the airport who needs the taxis, because they aren’t locals who take the metro.
The solution is there are a ton of scruffy guys with taxi jackets who’s job is to tell people who are lost that they should follow the AMB signs. The funny thing is in airports everywhere else the sketchy guys pitching taxis are scam artists. Since Barcelona is famous for pickpockets and scammers, you’d think the city wouldn’t try and make things even more confusing.
I’m sure there is a story as to why they didn’t just put up a sign labeled Taxi. The paid guys are clearly a fix for broken UX.

I think this is one of many great kinds of custom algorithms which would be great to have in Nostr. Bluesky has a feed called “quite posters” which are posts from people who don’t post too often, very similar to most recent post per person… The Meta algorithms have the opposite optimization, they’re making creators publish multiple times a day in order to get an audience. I love the idea of making it easy to see the quiet person who’s being lost in the flow right now of wonderful but enthusiastic posters like nostr:npub18ams6ewn5aj2n3wt2qawzglx9mr4nzksxhvrdc4gzrecw7n5tvjqctp424 and nostr:npub1r0rs5q2gk0e3dk3nlc7gnu378ec6cnlenqp8a3cjhyzu6f8k5sgs4sq9ac. These and others are people I REALLY want to follow, because they’ve got good things to say, but they say a lot, and we need to be able to see the other folks too.
I’d also love a feed which was AI summaries of a person’s posts or a thread. Take for example this thread: nostr:note1qcw5jys7tyzvssdlfx2y09ermnu4zm72q84qpwu75wyqj8v6868qvdwvnr It’s got tons of replies and discussion. Rather than just giving me the chronological or most ‘important’ replies or replies by people with the highest web of trust score for each user, we could feed that whole thread in to an LLM and create a summary with links directly in to the comments / discussions.

The press, social media vibe, and energy has shifted from Trump to Harris, but the polling shows that if the election were held today, Trump would win the electoral college by a landslide and lose the popular vote.
If this holds, it would mean that in 2000, 2016, and 2024 the Republicans won the election despite losing the popular vote. Only one time the Republicans win the election AND a majority of the votes this century, 2004.
What amazes me is how this dynamic is just accepted. This is not a well functioning democracy.

Plus web apps logged using Nostore on my iPhone including highlighter, habla, zap streams, flockstr, coracle, satellite earth, trustroots, and protest net (ditto + flockstr).
We’ve got a bunch of social feed apps, which is good, but the other apps help show that Nostr can be used for many kinds of apps.
What inspired this guy, and a ton of people at the #dwebcamp was just how many real apps, not just quick prototypes. nostr:npub16zsllwrkrwt5emz2805vhjewj6nsjrw0ge0latyrn2jv5gxf5k0q5l92l7 also setup a community scoped relay just for people at the conference, which was a great easy way to find everybody else there. Easy communities using relays.
When it came to bitcoin, folks had two concerns. First they wanted to know that using Nostr didn’t require money for each action, didn’t require a wallet to get started, didn’t require paying for an account to register, and wasn’t a blockchain project. They’re scared of the scams and barriers that they see with crypto. When I say, yeah, there’s a lightning wallet, which is bitcoin micropayments, meaning the transactions are cheap and don’t directly require mining, and let you optionally send tips and pay for services and content. Folks who would be ‘death to crypto’ and ‘I hate bitcoin’ often come around to ‘oh, yeah, that seems useful’. Because it’s optional and there appears to be a reason why they may opt in to it. And if they don’t want it, you can easily use Nostr without a wallet and it works just fine. The only other bitcoin thing was folks wanted content about things they’re into and not just posts about bitcoin. ;-D

I was at a dinner a couple nights ago with brian.behlendorf.com & Kevin Kelly who both helped start Wired Magazine, and a bunch of other interesting folks.
Brian made this point that when it comes to complex software systems worse is better. Referring to the essay on the subject from the early 90’s: https://dreamsongs.com/WorseIsBetter.html
The idea is that simpler systems that are easier to evolve tend to win over top down strongly architectured systems that tend to be inflexible.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worse_is_better
Nostr has the characteristics of the “worse” technologies that often win. HTML is worse than XML and Hypertext. JavaScript is worse than Java. TCP/IP is worse than OSI! We don’t remember that TCP/IP was the scrappy underdog protocol that the government tried to kill because they wanted their properly designed OSI protocols for the internet! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protocol_Wars
Twitter itself was worse, it’s a kind of minimalist thing which was powerfully extensible. The original Twitter api docs were a single page long. The original oauth spec was 6 pages long.
Worse is a better way to build technology to change the world.

I just gave a friend an update on what Nostr is and showed a bunch of apps in the ecosystem. Showing how fast it is and how all of these apps use the same identity and data but are different in their focus. He has been around the space of social media protocols for years but he was blown away.
We’ve really got something amazing. We need to do a better job of show and telling the story. It’s not about just zaps or censorship resistance or the way we’re doing web of trust moderation. We’ve built something which works really well. It fulfills the dream of the early days of the internet, web, and Web 2.0. An open interoperable internet, by and for the users.
As an aside, yes bitcoin is part of it, but it’s so politicalized that some people dismiss nostr as that bitcoin social media protocol. We see people join nostr and through it discover bitcoin, that’s the path to wide adoption.

This is a genuine question. Why do bitcoiners have so much faith that quantum computing won’t break the cryptography that secures bitcoin?
I don’t know how likely it is, but it feels like the chance is higher than 0% and lower than 100%. There’s a real non-zero chance that the current implementation of bitcoin won’t work in a decade. Doesn’t that give maxis cause for concern?
Maybe there is a good answer. I see lots of discussion about fiat, emissions around mining, privacy, taxes, and tons about regulation. But isn’t quantum computing an existential risk?
And if it is a real, potentially small, but fundamental risk, wouldn’t the prudent thing to do would be to diversify risk?

But like theoretically delete doesn’t guarantee that it’ll work but in reality in practice it works great.
Also centralized services don’t delete at all, they just hide content. So Nostr delete is actually better.

We setup a relay just for folks at the dweb camp as an experiment with creating smaller scoped communities on Nostr. At least with Nos where you can post to a single relay and also show a feed of all posts from a single relay, it worked pretty well.

Nostr doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Knowing and learning from other protocols is important. I’m excited that there is an OpenFrames alternative to Farcaster Frames. I’m also interested in tracking and learning from Bluesky. They’ve done an amazing job at algorithmic choice and simple experience for users joining, finding content, and being found.
Nostr shines with its huge catalog of apps and relatively good SDKs.
Bryan wrote the atproto labeling tool Ozone. His new update on their roadmap is worth taking a look if you care about the social media protocol ecosystem.

If you want a long history pay for a relay that retains the data.

A quick read says he’s a middle aged straight sober white guy, vet, and high school social studies teacher from the midwest. He coached his high school football team to state championship, is a hunter and was the teacher advisor for his school’s GSA.
He seems like a perfectly acceptable choice to me.

HI've noticed on Threads, Bluesky, and even some apps here on Nostr that I’m shown a lot more content from people I’m not following. This is often due to reposts, quote posts, or just the algorithms at work. While this content can be engaging and spark conversations, it’s often not healthy.
I see people posting obviously or maybe obliviously wrong things, which then get corrected and boosted, creating a vicious cycle. For example, someone mentioned considering a hyphenated name for their kids. I shared how my hyphenated name caused issues with computers, especially with international travel. This led to many calling me a bigot because the original poster was a queer woman. It’s odd because I’m queer myself, but it seems they felt an amab queer shouldn’t share personal experiences directly related to the topic.
I also saw clickbait articles about triathletes vomiting at the end of an Olympic triathlon, blaming it on a polluted river. Yes, the river is polluted, but triathletes often throw up at the end of races, and the swim was two hours before the nausea hit.
These issues occurred on Twitter too, but I didn’t experience it the same way there. I used Twitter daily from the moment Jack invited me and our coworkers onto the service, and for me, the conversations were healthier. I understand that many others had negative experiences, though.
On Nostr, I see zaps often rewarding hot takes and posts that signal membership in one group or another. This seems to exacerbate the issue, as people are incentivized to make posts that cater to specific in-groups rather than fostering genuine dialogue.
My worry is that maybe we’re actually doing worse with the new platforms. Is this something other people are seeing? How do we navigate this and foster healthier online conversations?

There’s a half court 3x3 basketball game in the Olympics. Why doesn’t the US field NBA players for the team? They failed to qualify for the 2020 Olympics but are in the Paris #olympics. I gotta think rather than playing a team of players who were cut or undrafted by the NBA and played in basketball leagues overseas, the US could just pick another 4 players from the NBA. It’s not like 3x3 is THAT different from full court basketball… i mean every NBA player grew up with it as a kid. Sure, the tactics and rules are somewhat different, but it’s MOSTLY the same game. Why wouldn’t there be some NBA players who didn’t make the full court 5x5 team not want to get a gold medal in half court 3x3?

We’ve created special relay for the nostr:npub1qspus6smkn8mcdxg5jflh50s69vdgtwsd5p74gmjpzp2qekn5duqfv5afj coverage of the Olympics. It’s an experiment with topical paid relays. Or you can pay nostr:npub1qspus6smkn8mcdxg5jflh50s69vdgtwsd5p74gmjpzp2qekn5duqfv5afj and get access to the full feed of exclusive coverage.
I am increasingly interested in the way Nostr can be used for sports coverage and community. It’s a community which needs the real time public conversation that exists on Twitter, that’s why they haven’t moved off to one of the alt platforms I think. What’s more, it’s a community that has some very real censorship issues which are focused on copyright and region blocking. There’s a whole world of live sports streaming which is constantly facing shutdown due to broadcasters trying to control their content.

I built an app wirh ruby on rails 0.5.0 back in July 2004. It was what lead to working on Odeo. We made an app for sms blasts. Then I got the job building Odeo because I was one of only two people in the San Francisco bay area with rails experience. Later we used the sms stuff combined with blog posting and reading and the dispatch status updates system. And it became Twitter.
