What worries me the most from what is going on is that a lot of individuals will be unnecessarily vilified / ostracized.

If you want to run a node that has clear defaults in terms of what it stores, with little control or say on the matter, run #Bitcoin #Core.
If you want full control over to remain flexible over what transactions are stored, run #Bitcon #Knots.
Simple.
Core closing up discussion on the matter and banning people is the real issue here in my opinion. But at the end of the day, that's what forks are for.

I've yet to find a clear definition of what a progressive even is. It's different depending upon who I ask. But that's the issue with most terms like that. And from what I have seen, the two concepts hardly seem compatible.
