Showy milkweed is incredibly abundant nearly everywhere West of the Mississippi River.
This variety is much less common. Rare is a good description. In the small agricultural town of Davis California there are a few thousand stems of showy milkweed “Davis” that have extra fuzzy leaves and grow better than other showy milkweeds at sea level. DNA analysis has been done to confirm it is not genetically different then the normal showy milkweed. But it will look unique from flower to leaf.
