北海道大の宇山智彦教授（中央アジア近代史・現代政治）は8日、フェイスブック（FB）で、日本学術会議を特殊法人化する政府提出法案を巡り4月の同会議の総会で「法律が通ることでこれまでとは違う人が入ってくる。文系には右に立っている人がいる。そういう人たちがここに入ってくる状態を許していいのか考える必要がある」などと述べた人物は自身だと明らかにした。
発言した意図について「（学術会議は）現在は政府と協力しつつ独立した立場を保てる研究者が会員になっているが、法人化後には右派が入って学術会議の活動を政治化する可能性があるのではないか」と説明。
そう疑問視する理由として「学術会議の法人化を中心的に唱えてきたのは、日本会議や（旧）統一教会（現・世界平和統一家庭連合）とつながりのある政治家たちであり、その人々が自分たちと同じ政治的立場を持つ人を学術会議の会員にしようと考えていても全くおかしくないからである」と主張した。
現在の学術会議に関しては「共産党に連なるような左派の存在は全く感じられない。学術会議の外での法人化反対運動が軍学共同反対運動とかなり重なっていることもあり、学術会議もそのイメージで見られがちだ」と指摘した。
一方、過去の学術会議では共産党系などの左派の会員が政治的な主張や活動をしていたとして「決して好ましいことではなかった」とした上で「法人化後の学術会議に右派が入ることも同様に好ましくない」とした。
宇山氏は「右派の影響力のもとで学術会議が、ジェンダーなど人権の問題や歴史観について、世論や学界の見方とは異なる抑圧的・国粋主義的な立場を取り、自民党右派や他の右派政党の政策にお墨付きを与えれば、大きな害があるだろう」などと主張した。
