１１日午後５時１０分頃、千葉市若葉区若松町の路上で、通行人の女性から「年配女性が倒れ、出血している」と１１０番があった。女性は背中に刺し傷があり、搬送先の病院で死亡が確認された。千葉東署は１２日、区内に住む中学３年の少年（１５）を殺人容疑で逮捕した。捜査関係者によると、少年は調べに「複雑な家庭環境から逃げたかった。誰でもいいから殺そうと思った」という趣旨の説明をしているという。
少年は１１日午後５時５分頃、同区若松町の路上で、高橋さんの背中を刃物のようなもので刺して殺害した疑い。「間違いないです」と容疑を認めているという。千葉県警は、少年と高橋さんに面識はなく、少年が無差別に襲った可能性もあるとみている。
同署幹部によると、現場付近の複数の防犯カメラには、事件が起きた時間帯に少年の姿が映っていた。１２日朝から少年に任意で事情を聞き、容疑を認めたため、１２日午後０時半頃に逮捕した。少年の自宅を捜索し、刃物などを押収した。
少年と同居する祖父（７３）が取材に応じ、「（被害者には）謝りようがない」とうなだれた。１２日未明に警察官約１０人が家に来て、「（少年の）２階の部屋から物を押収していった」という。少年に変わった様子は「全くなかった」と振り返り、「内向的で、内にこもるタイプ。私には悩みを相談しない」と語った。
同じ中学の同学年だという男子生徒（１４）は、少年について「先週金曜日（９日）も学校に普通に来ていた。変わった様子はなかった」と話す一方、「『家族とけんかした』と言って不機嫌な時が結構あった」と語った。授業中は寝ていることが多く、交友関係も活発ではなかったという。
