据香港电台网站5月17日消息，香港新冠病毒活跃程度处于高水平，儿童及成人严重个案的数字亦录得升幅。香港卫生防护中心辖下疫苗可预防疾病科学委员会主席刘宇隆认为，导致新一轮的新冠疫情爆发，原因很复杂，但估计主要可能因病毒株出现变异，污水监测显示更多是KP.3病毒株。另外，去年10月至今年3月中，社区传播率维持低水平，市民即使受感染亦未必有症状，或症状轻微。市民于半年前接种的疫苗，抗体已逐渐消失，结果自上月起，有一定数量人士受感染后，病毒逐渐在社区传播，于诊所及医院陆续见到求诊者增加。刘宇隆表示，今年至今，重症及死亡个案相对去年高峰时期为少，但不能掉以轻心，因为高危群组仍面对高风险，现在的疫苗仍有效预防重症和死亡。
