Cos'è il set UTXO e perché è importante per i nodi Bitcoin?
Il set UTXO (Unspent Transaction Output) è un database mantenuto dai nodi Bitcoin Core che contiene tutte gli output delle transazioni che non sono ancora state spese. Ogni volta che una transazione Bitcoin viene creata, essa spende una o più UTXO esistenti e crea una o più nuove UTXO. Questo set è fondamentale per la verifica delle transazioni, poiché un nodo deve poter confermare che gli input di una nuova transazione siano UTXO valide e spendibili. La dimensione del set UTXO influenza i requisiti di archiviazione e memoria per l'esecuzione di un nodo Bitcoin, specialmente durante la sincronizzazione iniziale dei blocchi (IBD).
Qual è l'attuale composizione del set UTXO in termini di tipi di script?
A partire dal blocco 892385 (14 aprile 2025), il tipo di script più comune nel set UTXO è Taproot (Pay to Taproot, p2tr) con il 34,2%, seguito da SegWit:
- Pay to Public Key Hash (p2pkh) con il 28,8%
- e Pay to Witness Public Key Hash (p2wpkh) con il 26,5%.
Tuttavia, in termini di valore totale di Bitcoin detenuto, SegWit ovvero p2pkh e p2wpkh detengono la maggior parte del valore (32,87% e 31,02% rispettivamente), mentre Taproot (p2tr) rappresenta solo lo 0,75% del valore totale.
Quante UTXO contengono meno di 1000 satoshi e quale tipo di script è prevalente in questa categoria?
Quasi la metà (49,1%) di tutte le UTXO nel set contengono meno di 1000 satoshi. Tra queste UTXO di piccolo valore, una grande proporzione (61,4%) utilizza il tipo di script p2tr. Questo suggerisce che molte delle UTXO di piccolo valore sono associate a schemi di incorporamento dati o protocolli di trasferimento che utilizzano la teoria ordinale.
Qual è la relazione tra le UTXO Taproot e le UTXO di piccolo valore?
Le UTXO Taproot mostrano una forte correlazione con le UTXO di piccolo valore. La vasta maggioranza (86%) delle UTXO p2tr ha un valore inferiore a 1000 satoshi. Questa disproporzione nel conteggio elevato delle UTXO p2tr rispetto al loro basso valore totale suggerisce un uso significativo di Taproot per scopi diversi dal semplice trasferimento di valore Bitcoin di grandi dimensioni.
Che impatto hanno le "UTXO relative alle inscription" sul set UTXO?
Le "UTXO relative alle inscription", identificate attraverso transazioni contenenti la sequenza OP_FALSE OP_IF nel witness, rappresentano una porzione significativa del set UTXO, costituendo il 29,6% del totale (oltre 51 milioni di UTXO). Sebbene rappresentino un numero elevato, il loro valore combinato è relativamente basso (circa 415 BTC) con un valore medio di soli 811 satoshi per UTXO. La maggior parte di queste UTXO relative alle inscription utilizza p2tr (72,86%), ma anche p2wpkh è ampiamente utilizzato (24,9%) probabilmente per sfruttare un limite di dust inferiore. Queste UTXO sono spendibili, ma contribuiscono comunque all'aumento della dimensione del set UTXO.
Cosa sono le UTXO Counterparty P2MS legacy e perché sono notevoli?
Sono state identificate oltre 100.000 (112.109) UTXO con tipo di script p2ms (Pay to Multisig) che contengono la stringa di byte "CNTRPRTY" o "CNTPRTY", associata al protocollo Counterparty. Queste UTXO sono state create oltre 10 anni fa e venivano utilizzate da Counterparty per archiviare dati arbitrari in chiavi multisig "finte". Sebbene teoricamente spendibili (poiché il primo degli N tasti pubblici è valido), la loro età e la loro origine legata alla memorizzazione di dati le rendono un esempio di "bloat" del set UTXO che i node runner devono gestire.
Quali sono le implicazioni della dimensione crescente del set UTXO per i node runner?
Un set UTXO di grandi dimensioni, che attualmente supera i 173 milioni di UTXO e richiede circa 11 GB di spazio su disco, ha diverse implicazioni per i node runner. Aumenta i requisiti di archiviazione, anche per i nodi potati. Inoltre, sebbene solo una piccola parte del set UTXO sia tenuta in RAM per una rapida ricerca, la dimensione complessiva rallenta il processo di Initial Block Download (IBD), specialmente per i dispositivi con memoria limitata e velocità di lettura/scrittura lente.
Quali soluzioni sono in fase di sviluppo per affrontare la crescita del set UTXO?
Sono in fase di sviluppo diverse soluzioni per mitigare l'impatto della crescita del set UTXO. Utreexo propone un approccio radicale per la verifica delle UTXO utilizzando prove crittografiche invece di memorizzare l'intero set, riducendo significativamente i requisiti di archiviazione. SwiftSync è un'altra proposta volta ad accelerare il processo di Initial Block Download attraverso l'uso di suggerimenti pre-generati. Queste soluzioni sono considerate importanti per mantenere l'accessibilità all'esecuzione di un nodo Bitcoin per una vasta gamma di operatori, qualora la dimensione del set UTXO continui ad aumentare.

The only (informed) argument I see for that position is something along the lines of "this acts as an endorsement that such data storage is fine, and will encourage people to do more of it. You can observe that this effect has already happened with a large increase in op_return activity since the pr was opened, and the creation of a new "op20" token scheme. That endorsement will flow over to schemes that use witness data, increasing their use as well. That will make it less likely that will have non-full blocks (due to more token usage of either type) and increase the data storage requirements of non-pruned nodes due to increased witness usage"
Personally, I think the immediate observable effect is due solely to the publicity the issue has generated and will disappear when attention moves elsewhere.
