Honderden demonstranten verzamelden zich gisteravond bij een federaal detentiecentrum. Ze eisten dat de immigratiedienst de aangehouden mensen vrijliet en riepen onder meer 'laat ze vrij, laat ze blijven' en hadden borden bij zich met daarop 'ICE uit LA'.
Uiteindelijk liep het uit op een confrontatie tussen de politie en de demonstranten. Betogers gooiden met stukken beton naar agenten. De politie zette vervolgens traangas, pepperspray en flitsgranaten in. Politiechef Jim McDonnell zei tegen CBS News dat de politie niet bij de operatie van ICE is betrokken en niet zal meewerken aan deportaties.
Burgemeester Bass is niet te spreken over de invallen van ICE. "Als burgemeester van een trotse stad van immigranten, die op zoveel manieren een bijdrage leveren aan onze stad, ben ik zeer boos over wat er is gebeurd", schrijft ze. "Deze tactieken zaaien terreur in onze gemeenschappen en schenden de basisprincipes van veiligheid in onze stad."
Ook zegt Bass dit soort acties niet te tolereren. Via X spreekt ze de immigranten toe. "Jullie horen hier. Jullie zijn niet alleen. Los Angeles is jullie thuis en we vechten voor jullie."
Donald Trump beloofde zijn kiezers een streng migratiebeleid en voert die belofte na de verkiezingen ook uit. Hij vindt dat miljoenen illegale immigranten zo snel mogelijk de Verenigde Staten uit moeten. Daarvoor wil het Witte Huis onder andere dat ICE in ieder geval 3000 arrestaties per dag verricht, om zo te kunnen voldoen aan Trumps deportatieplannen.
CBS News meldt dat ICE 2000 aanhoudingen per dag doet in de VS. Tijdens de eerste 100 dagen van Trumps nieuwe termijn lag dat gemiddelde nog op 660 arrestaties. Het laatste jaar dat Biden president was, was datzelfde gemiddelde ongeveer 300 per dag.
Eerder dit jaar vertelden migranten in de stad Aurora, in Colorado, aan de NOS dat ze niet meer naar hun werk gaan of hun kinderen thuishouden van school. Ook willen ze liever niet meer buiten in de rij staan bij de lokale voedselbank.
