Hacker TU Eindhoven had dagenlang ongemerkt toegang tot netwerk
De hacker die in januari werd betrapt bij het uitvoeren van een cyberaanval op de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven had al dagenlang ongemerkt toegang tot het netwerk. Dat blijkt uit een technisch onderzoek dat is uitgevoerd door cybersecuritybedrijf Fox-IT. Wie er achter de aanval zit, blijft onduidelijk.
Uit het onderzoek blijkt ook dat de universiteit door het oog van de naald is gekropen. De hacker wist zichzelf verregaande toegang tot het netwerk te geven. Daarmee was de weg vrij om in het netwerk rond te neuzen en te zoeken naar interessante bestanden.
De hacker had die bestanden kunnen stelen of het hele systeem kunnen 'gijzelen'. Dat betekent dat het digitaal op slot gaat en pas wordt vrijgegeven als een bedrag aan losgeld wordt betaald, een zogenoemde ransomware-aanval.
Zover kwam het uiteindelijk niet, omdat de TU Eindhoven het netwerk in de nacht van zaterdag 11 op zondag 12 januari offline haalde. Dat gebeurde toen de hacker probeerde om de back-ups uit te schakelen. Zonder back-up is een digitale gijzeling veel succesvoller. Slachtoffers van ransomware hebben vaak twee opties: de back-up terugzetten, of losgeld betalen.
Hacker zat vijf dagen in netwerk
Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat de hacker op 6 januari inlogde op het netwerk van de TU Eindhoven. De aanwezigheid werd pas een aantal dagen later ontdekt: in de late avond van zaterdag 11 januari. Op dat moment probeerde de hacker zichzelf de verregaande rechten voor het netwerkbeheer te geven.
De universiteit merkte iets daarvoor, rond 21.00 uur, de verdachte activiteiten op de servers. Omdat die activiteiten leken op een digitale aanval gingen de alarmbellen rinkelen.
Pas toen de hacker rond 01.00 uur de back-ups probeerde uit te schakelen, drukte de universiteit op noodstop in en werd het interne netwerk offline gehaald.
Het onderwijs van de TU Eindhoven lag daarna een week zo goed als plat. Studenten konden niet bij hun e-mail en studiemateriaal, waardoor tentamens moesten worden uitgesteld.
