To add insult to injury, the stuff that really ends up being impactful always tends to be the stuff that got little to no public investment. Really big names like Nicola Tesla, Henry Ford, Rudolph Diesel, Farnsworth, The Wright Brothers, these are all just individuals with dreams... Even like Bell Labs and Xerox Parc were not really taxpayer funded.
Obviously everyone wants more of those, but then on the side of the stuff that gets funded, there are a ton of things which were just total money pits which never amounted to anything.
I get it that as a researcher, the prospect of losing USGOV $ is shitty, but if you're talking about American competitiveness, I'd say the only place where ROI from public money has really been demonstrated is in DARPA.
