'We were facing financial difficulties in Brazil and thought we would have more opportunities in Portugal,' she told Folha de S.Paulo. Born in northeastern Brazil, Patricia came with her husband and a four-year-old daughter. Her husband quickly found a job in construction and obtained a residence permit. Patricia has been trying to regularize her documents for nine years. In March of this year, she learned that her request had been denied - and that she might be part of a contingent of 5,000 Brazilians invited to leave the European country. 'I hope I'm not sent away. Despite the high cost of living, I live better here than in Brazil,' Patricia says. She says she has tried to regularize her status in every way. First, she applied for family reunification: people married to residents in Portugal have the right to stay in the country. She made the request, but the queue was huge, and she was never called for an interview. Then, she turned to the mechanism of manifest interest: immigrants who could prove work and income had, until recently, the right to live in Portugal. Patricia works as a domestic cleaner. Again, she entered the queue and was not called. In March 2023, she made a third attempt, applying for a residence permit under the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). The process was supposed to be simple: she filled out a form online, printed a certificate, and waited for an interview, which was supposed to take no more than 90 days. She was called in March 2025, two years later. In April, she received the news of the denial. 'I'm working, I have proof of income, but I couldn't prove 12 consecutive months because I had to stop working to take care of my baby,' Patricia says, who gave birth to a second daughter during her journey. The saga of the Brazilian is typical of the situation of immigrants in Portugal, victims of bureaucratic slowness and constant changes in legislation. In 2007, the country approved one of the most liberal immigration laws on the continent. The European Union recommended that countries only admit immigrants with consular visas, obtained in their countries of origin. Through the manifest interest mechanism, Portugal became one of the few places to allow, after the fact, the regularization of immigrants who entered without a visa. After successive regulations, between 2017 and 2024, the number of foreigners in Portugal almost quadrupled, from 400,000 to 1.5 million, according to official data. In June last year, the Portuguese government abolished the manifest interest mechanism, an effort to adapt the country to EU norms. However, this measure was not retroactive. The government had to create a task force to clear the backlog - people who, like Patricia, had registered but were not called for an interview. Last week, the government presented a balance of the task force. Of the 440,000 requests, 184,000 were analyzed. Of these, 150,000 received authorization and 34,000 were called to leave the country. The highest rejection rate was for Indian citizens (46.4%). Among Brazilians, it was 7.3%, which means that 5,386 Brazilians will have to leave Portugal. Patricia is part of another contingent, the 210,000 foreigners who tried to regularize their status in Portugal using the CPLP visa. The measure sparked international criticism. As the online application generates a provisional document - a sheet of paper with a QR code - many immigrants found that they could go to other EU countries with the paper and were blocked at the border. 'The manifest interest mechanism, created by the socialist government, was a very alternative path that left people in a kind of limbo for a long time,' says Brazilian lawyer Wilson Bicalho, a reference in the field and responsible for Patricia's appeal. 'What the new social-democratic government is doing is nothing compared to what happens in the United States. They are simply clearing the backlog, applying regulations that have been in place for a long time, such as the requirement to prove income and work.' Ana Paula Costa, president of the Casa do Brasil in Lisbon, an organization that supports Brazilian immigrants, has a criticism of the government. 'Applying immigration rules is the prerogative of all countries. What we don't accept is the relationship being made, in political discourse, between immigration and public security, as if immigrants brought crime and violence,' she says. In his inaugural speech last Thursday, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, who has just been re-elected, said: 'We will maintain the same course in immigration and security policies. Portugal is a safe country, but it is worth preserving that value as one of the safest countries in the world.' He added: 'A responsible, regulated, and humanistic immigration policy is a fundamental element for economic success and wealth creation, as is security.' Patricia, who preferred not to be identified in this report with her real name, is now pregnant with her third child. Zeus has some problems, but it's the one I use the most. I installed Cake and have to admit that the onboarding was the best I've seen. I haven't used it extensively and likely won't until it has Lightning support. But it looks promising.

I have an ongoing POC running locally. I haven't found a better way than whitelisting/blacklisting NWC-specific nostr+walletconnect:// URIs or random npubs encoded in them. Either that, or leaving the relay completely open, which is... not great.
The second issue, for basically everyone except wallet/NWC payment service developers, is that there's a lot of back-and-forth between the wallet and the relay. The wallet also needs to be configurable enough to forward events to your specific relay (many aren't). Most won't even allow external tools to query all NWC-specific events, so we can't even use the same subscribe/import trick we're using for kind:1 events. This is why I haven't committed my POC upstream yet. I haven’t found much use for end users, unless the user has full control over their NWC stack. And if they do, they can use your other relay.
Hopefully we can convince more custodial wallet devs to allow users to use their own payment relays in the future. This would make private payment relays much more useful to end users.
