A group of 14 energy CEOs have written a letter to all major federal parties urging them to declare an “energy crisis” in Canada and use emergency powers to relax regulations within the industry and increase production levels.

The CEOs, who represent the 10 largest oil and gas companies and four largest pipeline companies in Canada, suggest several measures to support oil and natural gas investment and “remove the barriers we have imposed on ourselves over time.”
“By declaring a Canadian energy crisis and key projects in the ‘national interest’ the federal government will be able to use all its available emergency powers to ensure that the dramatic regulatory restructuring required to expand the oil and natural gas sector is rapidly achieved,” they said in https://www.cnrl.com/build-canada-now/
The letter was addressed to Prime Minister Mark Carney, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, and Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet.
The CEOs are calling for regulatory simplification by revising or abolishing the Impact Assessment Act and oil tanker ban on B.C.’s north coast, which they said are “impeding development.” They are also requesting a reduction in regulatory timelines to allow approval of major projects within six months of application, as well as the provision of loan guarantees for indigenous communities to ensure they benefit from the development.

Nvidia CEO Huang Says He Was Wrong About Timeline For Quantum
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang on Thursday walked back comments he made in January, when he cast doubt on whether useful quantum computers would hit the market in the next 15 years. From a report: At Nvidia's "Quantum Day" event, part of the company's annual GTC Conference, Huang admitted that his comments came out wrong. "This is the first event in history where a company CEO invites all of the guests to explain why he was wrong," Huang said.
In January, Huang sent quantum computing stocks reeling when he said 15 years was "on the early side" in considering how long it would be before the technology would be useful. He said at the time that 20 years was a timeframe that "a whole bunch of us would believe." In his opening comments on Thursday, Huang drew comparisons between pre-revenue quantum companies and Nvidia's early days. He said it took over 20 years for Nvidia to build out its software and hardware business.
He also expressed surprise that his comments were able to move markets, and joked he didn't know that certain quantum computing companies were publicly traded. "How could a quantum computer company be public?" Huang said.

To illustrate the hair splitting, we can say that deposits come out of thin air, as banks extend them in excess of their cash. They often do this to buy treasury securities, which in some sense we can say are backing these deposits. When those deposits get demanded (spent), the banks will repo the treasuries, either to get reserves, or often, deposits at another bank, when those deposits in turn can cover the debt being settled (perhaps directly with the bank on the other side of the transaction). While treasuries may not be spent at the grocery store, there is very much a sense in which banks do use them as money, through discounting, to settle between each other. ESPECIALLY in the Eurodollar system, where most dollars in the world exist, and where reserves do not. Also of note is that things that aren't treasuries at times fulfill this role, such as various derivatives including forex and currency swaps, and famously in the early 2000's, securitized agency backed mortgage debt. Naturally, some of this collateral is better than others, and both credit and durstion risk are hazards banks engaging in the money markets need tl manage to maintain liquidity (and thus, stay alive).
QE is an emergency measure undertaken to fill in the hole when those risks are not adequately managed. The thing about emergency measures though is that alarm bells make people panic. They say, risk is high right now, be careful. So banks lend less, both to the real economy and to each other. Making matters worse, this gets done when interest rates are low -- and discounting is one of the primary methods banks use to manage credit and duration risk. So they lend less. The result is, there is less money, or, precisely, credit, floating around in the system. Making it harder for those with outstanding debt to make good on their liabilities, further impairing bank assets.
So what's my point. QE was sold to the nation as inflationary money printing; something that would jump start the economy. Both in the US, and where it was pioneered in Japan for 30 years unsuccessfully. That it may be technically called money printing is little solace given the impact it has on the broad money supply. Beyond that, those reserves aren't really money, so much as a debt themselves that the Fed extinguishes with interest earned on its operations, offset by what it terms 'deferred assets' on its balance sheet. The Treasury will print money to back them where necessary to be sure, so I do see your reason to say once the reserves are issued, it's as good as money printing, but given that we're in hair splitting territory, I'd just gold enough isn't good enough. Especially when there's a case to be made that the Treasury's issuance can be said to be their debt to every holder of those notes, which gets extinguished through the counteracting debt of taxation.
J.P. Morgan once said 'Gold is money; everything else is credit.' We may have been on the gold standard at the time, but we had those same paper dollar bills. They were credit then, and they're credit now. The difference now, though, is that we have Bitcoin, which also is not credit.
So again, I urge bitcoiners to give Jeff some grace. We all use sloppy language sometimes. By all means having these discussions to clarify are great; steel sharpens steel. But when disagreeing, be sure you're doing it from an angle that lets your own blade sharpen too.

Ergebnis des Trump-Putin-Gesprächs

Die lang erwartete Telefonkonferenz zwischen Donald Trump und Wladimir Putin fand wie geplant diese Woche am Dienstag statt. Im Vorfeld gab es zahlreiche propagandistische Spekulationen. So berichteten die Ukrainer der New York Times, Trump werde Russlands Kontrolle über Odessa anerkennen. Zudem kursierten von Wunschdenken getriebene Gerüchte, Putin könnte die Kontrolle über das Kernkraftwerk Saporischschja (ZNPP) aufgeben. Nichts von dem geschah.
Das Weiße Haus betonte in seiner Darstellung des Gesprächs der beiden Präsidenten, dass Trump Putin dazu gebracht habe, Angriffe auf die Energieinfrastruktur in der Ukraine 30 Tage auszusetzen. Mit dieser Einwilligung hatte sich Putin jedoch nichts vergeben, da derartige Angriffe aktuell keine zentrale Rolle mehr in Russlands Militärstrategie spielen. Mit dem Frühling in Sicht beeinträchtigt die Einstellung solcher Angriffe die russischen Offensivoperationen entlang der Kontaktlinie nicht.
In der Darstellung des Gesprächs auf der Webseite des russischen Präsidenten lieferte der Kreml eine nüchterne Darstellung der wichtigsten besprochenen Punkte. Laut Kreml-Mitteilung umfassen die:
Putin unterstützte Trumps Vorschlag, für 30 Tage keine Energieinfrastruktur in Russland und der Ukraine anzugreifen.
Russland wies auf Probleme bei der Sicherung eines möglichen Waffenstillstands hin, darunter die Notwendigkeit, Zwangsmobilisierungen in der Ukraine sowie die Aufrüstung der ukrainischen Streitkräfte zu stoppen.
Putin betonte, dass eine Schlüsselbedingung für das Kriegsende die vollständige Einstellung militärischer und nachrichtendienstlicher Unterstützung Kiews durch andere Staaten sei.
Der Kreml hob einen geplanten Gefangenenaustausch am 19. März hervor, bei dem jeweils 175 Personen pro Seite sowie zusätzlich 23 schwer verletzte ukrainische Soldaten als Geste des guten Willens freigelassen werden sollen.
Russland äußerte Interesse an der Wiederbelebung diplomatischer Aktivitäten in den USA, etwa durch die Wiedereröffnung geschlossener Konsulate in San Francisco und Seattle.
Die Mitteilung lobte Trumps Bereitschaft, zur Beendigung der Feindseligkeiten beizutragen, betonte jedoch die Notwendigkeit, die „Ursachen der Krise“ anzugehen und „Russlands legitime Sicherheitsinteressen“ anzuerkennen.
Der Kreml erwähnte die Rolle der Ukraine in Friedensverhandlungen nicht, sondern wies auf „erhebliche Risiken“ bei Verhandlungen mit dem „Kiewer Regime“ hin.
Insgesamt zeigt die Kreml-Darstellung, dass zwar Fortschritte bei einzelnen Punkten erzielt wurden, ein umfassender Waffenstillstand jedoch aussteht. Während Trump und sein Team mit dem Gespräch zufrieden waren, gilt dies nicht für Selenskyj und die Europäer, die ihre Bedeutungslosigkeit in den Verhandlungen spüren.
Das Gespräch signalisierte der Ukraine, Großbritannien, Frankreich und Deutschland deutlich, dass sie bei den Verhandlungen zur Beendigung des Krieges keine Rolle spielen.
Während des 90-minütigen Gesprächs am Dienstag erklärte das Weiße Haus, dass Präsident Putin sich verpflichtet habe, für 30 Tage keine Angriffe auf die Energieinfrastruktur der Ukraine durchzuführen. Auch die Kreml-Mitteilung bestätigte dies: „Während des Gesprächs schlug Trump eine gegenseitige Vereinbarung vor, für 30 Tage keine Energieinfrastruktur anzugreifen. Putin begrüßte die Initiative und wies das russische Militär umgehend an, sich daran zu halten.“ Allerdings hat Russland bisher nicht zugestimmt, andere Angriffe einzustellen, und wird wahrscheinlich weiterhin hart gegen die Ukraine vorgehen.
Ukraine verletzt unmittelbar nach Gesprächen absichtlich das Putin-Trump-Abkommen.
Weniger als 24 Stunden nach dem Telefonat zwischen Trump und Putin warf Russland der Ukraine vor, das Trump-Abkommen bereits gebrochen zu haben. Das russische Verteidigungsministerium erklärte am Mittwoch, dass die Ukraine eine Öl-Umladestation in der Region Krasnodar in Russland angegriffen habe, die eine internationale Pipeline bedient, an der auch amerikanische Investoren beteiligt sind.
Laut russischem Ministerium hatten in der Nacht von Dienstag auf Mittwoch drei ukrainische Kamikaze-Drohnen die Öl-Anlage nahe dem Dorf Kawkaßkaja angriffen. Die Station überträgt Rohöl in eine Pipeline, die vom Kaspischen Pipeline-Konsortium (CPC) betrieben wird, ein internationales Unternehmen, zu dessen Partnern die US-Riesen Chevron und Mobil gehören. Dabei soll einer der Öl-Tanks in Brand gesetzt worden sein. Die Löscharbeiten sollen laut Berichten lange gedauert haben, was auf einen erheblichen Schaden hinweist.
Moskau stuft den Angriff als Teil eines absichtlichen Versuchs ein, Trump zu provozieren, um ihm klar zu machen, dass es ohne Beteiligung der Ukraine an den Gesprächen keine Fortschritte bei einem Friedens- oder Waffenstillstandsabkommen zwischen Russland und den USA geben wird.
Ein wirtschaftliches Zurück mit dem Westen zu früheren Bedingungen ist unmöglich.
Kurz vor dem Gespräch mit Trump sprach Putin auf dem „Kongress der Russischen Union der Industriellen und Unternehmer“ und analysierte die westlichen Sanktionen wie folgt:
Sanktionen seien kein vorübergehendes oder gezieltes Mittel, sondern ein Mechanismus, um systemischen und strategischen Druck gegen Russland auszuüben. Unabhängig von globalen Entwicklungen würden westliche Wettbewerber stets versuchen, Russlands wirtschaftliche und technologische Kapazitäten einzuschränken. Während westliche Eliten diesen Konflikt früher verbal höflich verpackt hatten, haben sie nun inzwischen jede Rücksicht fallen gelassen und drohen bei jeder Nichtigkeit mit neuen Sanktionen. Das russische Finanzministerium bezifferte die Zahl der West-Sanktionen gegen Einzelpersonen und Unternehmen auf 28.595 – weit mehr als gegen alle anderen Staaten zusammen.
Selbst bei Gesten des Entgegenkommens, etwa dem Angebot, Sanktionen zu lockern, werde stets ein neuer Weg gefunden, Druck auszuüben – ähnlich wie beim Jackson-Vanik-Amendment, das trotz des Endes der Sowjetunion und guter Beziehungen zu den USA in den 1990er Jahren bestehen blieb und später durch andere Einschränkungen ersetzt wurde. Putin betonte, dass Sanktionen Teil einer neuen Phase globaler wirtschaftlicher Rivalität seien, die die alten Normen der Welthandelsorganisation obsolet machen würden, denn die würden dem Westen immer weniger nützten. Ein Zurück zu früheren Bedingungen des wirtschaftlichen Austauschs sei auf absehbare Zukunft unmöglich; freier Handel, Zahlungsverkehr oder Kapitalfluss sowie westliche Schutzmechanismen für Investoren seien Dinge von gestern.

Yesterday was my dog’s 10th birthday. He’s getting older and slower.
Totally unrelated but does anyone have any idea why Bitcoin price hasn’t gone back up? I’ve been wanting to buy a Bitaxe or some other equipment to solomine and setup a lightning node but I’m not going to do it until Bitcoin gets back to $100,000.
