Vier dagen voor de uitvaart van paus Franciscus is de strijd in Rome voor de uitverkiezing van zijn opvolger al losgebarsten. Ruim honderd kardinalen kiezen binnenkort het nieuwe hoofd van de Rooms-Katholieke Kerk.
Tot het conclaaf kunnen kardinalen zichzelf in de kijker spelen. Maar dan wel zo onopvallend mogelijk, want rond pausverkiezingen geldt in het Vaticaan al tijden een oud gezegde: wie het conclaaf ingaat als paus, vertrekt als kardinaal.
Het is niet uitgesloten dat de opvolger van paus Franciscus eveneens uit Latijns-Amerika afkomstig is, of uit Azië of van het Afrikaans continent komt. Van de 134 stemgerechtigde kardinalen zijn veruit de meesten (110) aangesteld door paus Franciscus, van wie een behoorlijk aantal uit Afrika, Azië en Latijns-Amerika.
Daarmee is het college van kardinalen een stuk universeler dan toen Franciscus zelf in 2013 gekozen werd. Toen vormden Europese en Noord-Amerikaanse kardinalen een tweederdemeerderheid; de meerderheid die nodig is om tot paus verkozen te worden. Dat gold ook toen Benedictus in 2005 paus werd.
In vergelijking met die vorige pausverkiezingen zijn vooral aanzienlijk minder Italiaanse kardinalen stemgerechtigd.
Eretitel
De aanstelling van nieuwe kardinalen is voorbehouden aan de paus. Het is een eretitel, de belangrijkste taak van kardinalen is het kiezen van een nieuwe paus. Alleen kardinalen die jonger dan 80 jaar zijn mogen meestemmen.
Dat zoveel stemgerechtigde kardinalen zijn benoemd door paus Franciscus, wil niet zeggen dat zijn opvolger zijn beleid zal voortzetten, stelt Anton de Wit, hoofdredacteur van het Katholiek Nieuwsblad.
Paus Franciscus heeft volgens De Wit "een breed scala" aan vrienden en vijanden aangesteld als kardinaal.
Er gaan meerdere namen rond van kardinalen die de 267ste paus kunnen worden. Een van de kardinalen die genoemd worden als serieuze kanshebber is de 70-jarige Pietro Parolin.
De Italiaan was als staatssecretaris van de Heilige Stoel de rechterhand van paus Franciscus.
Een andere naam die genoemd wordt is die van de Filipijn Luis Antonio Tagle. Met hem zou de Rooms-Katholieke Kerk de eerste paus uit Azië krijgen. Hij was aartsbisschop van Manilla toen hij door Franciscus naar Rome werd gehaald om ervaring op te doen in de Curie, het bestuursapparaat van de kerk.
Na een stroeve start is hij nu verantwoordelijk voor de belangrijkste afdeling van evangelisatie.
Een derde potentiële kanshebber is de 72-jarige Péter Erdő uit Hongarije. Hij is geliefd in de conservatieve hoek. Zo is hij fel gekant tegen de zegen voor homostellen. Erdő werd in 2003 door paus Johannes Paulus II benoemd en was indertijd een van de jongste kardinalen.
Tientallen kardinalen kwamen vanochtend samen voor de eerste vergadering:
In zeer conservatieve en traditionele katholieke media gaat ook de naam van Wim Eijk rond. Hij is de enige Nederlandse kardinaal. De aartsbisschop van Utrecht kreeg de eretitel in 2012.
Tegen de Amsterdamse omroep AT5 zegt Eijk ervoor open te staan om de nieuwe paus te worden. "Als de kardinalen je kiezen, dan kun je dat zien als een roeping die je krijgt van de Heilige Geest", zegt de 71-jarige Nederlander.
"Ik denk dat je dan echt in geweten verplicht bent om ja te zeggen." Eijk deed de uitspraken in een programma dat kort voor de dood van paus Franciscus werd opgenomen.
Een woordvoerder van de Nederlandse Bisschoppenconferentie benadrukt dat kardinalen zichzelf niet kunnen aanbieden. "De kardinaal heeft gezegd dat als er een beroep op hem zou worden gedaan hij dit niet zou weigeren. Dit is dus iets anders dan jezelf aanbieden en ervoor lobbyen. Een heel belangrijk verschil."
Bondjes vormen
Deze eeuw hoefden katholieken nog niet lang op witte rook te wachten. Zowel paus Benedictus als paus Franciscus werd binnen twee dagen gekozen. Hoofdredacteur Anton de Wit van het Katholiek Nieuwsblad en Vaticaankenner Stijn Fens sluiten niet uit dat de verkiezing ditmaal langer duurt.
"Het gezelschap is zo divers dat kardinalen elkaar nog niet goed kennen", zegt Fens in de podcast De Dag. "Het zal nog een hele toer worden om bondjes te vormen. In die zin is het net Expeditie Robinson."

You could just try naturally sweet fruits. I’ve been making smoothies for myself for the first time ever, and I’m not sweetening them at all. Just 1/3 ish of the smoothie is a mix of passionfruit pulp and mango pulp and it’s quite tasty.
