Opnieuw meer meldingen van discriminatie: 'Verruwing in de maatschappij'
De politie en andere officiële instanties kregen vorig jaar opnieuw meer meldingen binnen van discriminatie. Het aantal meldingen bij het landelijke meldpunt Discriminatie.nl is zelfs meer dan verdubbeld. Het is het vijfde jaar op rij dat het aantal meldingen in Nederland toeneemt.
Dat blijkt uit het jaarlijkse rapport Discriminatiecijfers in 2024, waarin het aantal meldingen bij officiële instanties wordt samengevoegd. De meldingen geven geen compleet beeld van het probleem van discriminatie in Nederland, omdat slechts een klein deel van incidenten wordt gemeld en geregistreerd.
Opiniemakers en politici
Bij het landelijke meldpunt Discriminatie.nl kwamen vorig jaar bijna 15.000 meldingen binnen, meer dan het dubbele van het aantal in 2023. Volgens de opstellers van het rapport heeft dit deels te maken met de grotere naamsbekendheid van de website.
Bijna de helft (45 procent) van de totale meldingen ging over discriminatie op basis van afkomst of nationaliteit.
Ook wisten mensen het meldpunt beter te vinden na discriminerende uitspraken van opiniemakers en politici. Zo zouden meer dan 1000 mensen een melding hebben gemaakt na de tv-uitzending van Vandaag Inside, waarin Derksen zei dat Tweede Kamerlid Habtamu de Hoop geen Fries was.
In totaal werden meer dan vijfduizend meldingen van discriminatie ingediend na uitspraken van opiniemakers en politici. Meer dan de helft daarvan ging over de coronamaatregelen die gezondheidsminister De Jonge afkondigde tussen 2020 en 2022. Veel mensen voelden zich hierdoor gediscrimineerd en dienden een melding met terugwerkende kracht in. Meldingen gingen bijvoorbeeld over de vaccinatiecampagne van de overheid en het coronatoegangsbewijs.
Slecht 3 procent doet melding bij politie
De politie ontving vorig jaar in totaal 9613 discriminatiemeldingen, 623 meer dan in 2023. Bijna de helft daarvan gaat over over discriminatie op grond van herkomst, 29 procent over seksuele gerichtheid en 9 procent over antisemitisme.
Ook bij de site Meld.OnlineDiscriminatie.nl stegen het aantal meldingen van discriminatie: van 483 naar 718, een toename van bijna 50 procent. Ook dat kan wijzen op de groeiende naamsbekendheid van het meldpunt, staat in het rapport. Bij de Kinderombudsman bleef het aantal meldingen gelijk, namelijk 19.
Een kanttekening bij het rapport is dat het geen volledig beeld geeft van discriminatie in Nederland. Uit onderzoek van het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) blijkt dat slechts een op de tien mensen melding doet van discriminatie.
"'Ik vind het lastig om het werkelijke beeld achter deze cijfers te duiden", zegt de Groningse districtschef Frank Smilda, die zich bezighoudt met het tegengaan van discriminatie. "Wat we zien is een stijging van het aantal meldingen. Gezien de huidige verruwing in de maatschappij, maar ook in de omgang met elkaar door politici, kan ik me dat goed voorstellen."
