Van Vroonhoven was al geruime tijd de rechterhand van Omtzigt. Samen richtten ze de partij op en voerden ze campagne. Bij de verkiezingen behaalde NSC twintig zetels en werd daarmee in één klap de vierde partij van het land, al staat de partij in de peilingen nu op enorm verlies.
Van Vroonhoven verving Omtzigt toen hij met een burn-out thuiszat. Toen hij in november het werk weer oppikte, verdeelden ze de taken. Van Vroonhoven voerde namens NSC de onderhandelingen over de voorjaarsnota, al deed Omtzigt naar verluidt tot op het laatste moment op de achtergrond mee.
