Lake Karum, located in the Danakil Depression in northeastern Ethiopia, is a unique and fascinating feature of the Ethiopian landscape. This saltwater lake is part of the Afar Triangle, one of the most geologically active regions in the world, where the Earth's crust is actively being pulled apart due to tectonic forces. The lake is surrounded by expansive salt flats, created by the evaporation of water in this hot and arid climate. The striking greenish hue of Lake Karum’s waters is due to the high concentration of salts and minerals, including sodium carbonate, which gives the water its vivid coloration.
Lake Karum is one of the several lakes in the Danakil Depression and lies at the lowest point of the area, below sea level. De Amerikaanse defensieminister Pete Hegseth liet een onbeveiligde internetverbinding aanleggen in zijn kantoor, zodat hij de versleutelde app Signal op zijn persoonlijke computer kon gebruiken. Dat zeggen anonieme bronnen tegen persbureau AP en ABC News.
Door gebruik te maken van wat ook wel een 'dirty line' wordt genoemd - een rechtstreekse internetverbinding zonder ingebouwde cyberbeveiliging - zou Hegseth de veiligheidsprotocollen van het Pentagon naast zich hebben neergelegd. Zo'n dirty line is kwetsbaarder dan de gebruikelijke communicatiemiddelen van het Amerikaanse ministerie van Defensie, omdat die geen bescherming biedt tegen externe dreigingen zoals hacking en spionage.
Volgens een anonieme bron liep Hegseth aanvankelijk steeds naar de achterkant van zijn kantoor, waar hij verbinding kon maken met een wifinetwerk om Signal te gebruiken. Later liet hij zo'n verbinding installeren in zijn eigen kantoor, zodat hij er aan zijn bureau gebruik van kon maken.
Dat zou betekenen dat er soms drie computers op zijn bureau stonden: twee van het Pentagon die gebruikmaken van beveiligde communicatiesystemen, en zijn persoonlijke computer. Waar Hegseth Signal precies voor gebruikte wanneer hij verbonden was met het netwerk, is niet bekend.
Omdat elektronische apparaten kwetsbaar zijn voor spionage, mogen die doorgaans niet worden meegenomen naar het kantoor van de minister van Defensie. Belangrijke kantoren in het Pentagon hebben een kast of lade waar personeel of bezoekers de apparaten moeten achterlaten.
Signalschandaal
Onthullingen die vragen oproepen over de manier waarop Hegseth omgaat met vertrouwelijke informatie stapelen zich op. Vorige maand werd de hoofdredacteur van het tijdschrift The Atlantic onbedoeld toegevoegd aan een topgeheime chatgroep waarin Amerikaanse topfunctionarissen plannen deelden over een aanval op Houthi-rebellen. Begin deze maand kondigde de toezichthouder van het Pentagon een intern onderzoek aan naar het handelen van minister Hegseth van Defensie in het Signalschandaal.
Deze week bleek Hegseth plannen over die aanval ook met onder anderen zijn vrouw, broer en persoonlijk advocaat te hebben gedeeld. Die informatie was afkomstig uit een beveiligd militair communicatiekanaal, onthulde NBC News afgelopen dinsdag.
Het is echter de vraag of de nieuwste onthulling gevolgen zal hebben voor Hegseth. Tot nu toe bleef Trump steeds pal achter zijn defensieminister staan. "Pete doet fantastisch werk. Iedereen is blij met hem", zei Trump toen bekend werd dat Hegseth informatie met familieleden had gedeeld. "Er is geen sprake van slecht functioneren", voegde hij toe.

If you are both using Bisq why would you inform the bank that it was a bitcoin transaction? Doesn’t make sense.
