Rechter gearresteerd in VS op verdenking van hinderen grenspolitie
Amerikaanse autoriteiten hebben een rechter uit de staat Wisconsin opgepakt en aangeklaagd. Ze wordt ervan beschuldigd de federale immigratiedienst te hebben gehinderd bij een arrestatie.
De arrestatie van rechter Hannah Dugan (65) werd bekendgemaakt door de directeur van de FBI, Kash Patel. Hij zegt dat de rechter de grenspolitie hinderde toen die een man zonder verblijfspapieren probeerde op te pakken in haar rechtszaal.
De man moest voorkomen voor huiselijk geweld. Toen de agenten aankwamen, zou de rechter hem hebben laten ontsnappen via een speciale deur voor juryleden. De grenspolitie pakte de man uiteindelijk na een korte achtervolging alsnog op.
De rechter werd vanochtend gearresteerd in haar eigen gerechtsgebouw. Kort na de arrestatie verzamelde zich een menigte voor de rechtbank, die de onmiddellijke vrijlating van de rechter eiste.
Inmiddels is de rechter voorgeleid en vrijgelaten. Tijdens de zitting zei de advocaat van Dugan dat ze haar arrestatie "hartgrondig betreurt" en bezwaar maakt. "Het is niet gebeurd in het belang van de openbare veiligheid", zei de advocaat, die verder niet op de zaak wilde ingaan.
Strijd tussen Trump en rechters
De arrestatie van de rechter is de zoveelste escalatie in de opgelopen spanningen tussen de regering-Trump en de rechtelijke macht. Eerder had het ministerie van Justitie aangegeven streng te zullen optreden als lokale overheidsfunctionarissen het landelijke migratiebeleid zouden belemmeren.
Sinds president Trump opnieuw aan de macht is, voeren de Verenigde Staten een verscherpt migratiebeleid. Zo gebruikte Trump een oorlogswet uit 1798 om 250 veronderstelde bendeleden uit Venezuela en El Salvador uit te zetten naar een beruchte terrorismegevangenis in El Salvador. Dit gebeurde ondanks een verbod van een Amerikaanse rechter.
