Ed tech is growing faster in the UK than Japanese knotweed. London is the biggest ed tech city in Europe, and with 5.5 per cent growth every year, the UK’s ed tech sector is predicted to be worth more than £9.5 billion by next year. This will not come as a surprise to parents, who are realising that the more they decrease their kids’ screen time at home, the more schools are increasing it. According to its defenders, ed tech is the modern way to enhance learning. So efficient, so whizzy. And for some — postgrads, say — maybe it does work that way, sometimes. But ed tech in primary schools is a different story. Behold this brave new world in which ten-year-olds upload essays onto tech portals, where their friends grade them with emojis, and where five-year-olds are taught how to count by AI characters who emit fireworks. Schools insist that ed tech is the future, but it looks increasingly like technological slop that is making our kids dumber. In 2023 Unesco published a 700-page book, An Ed-Tech Tragedy?, which describes how ed tech has led to poorer education but greater privatisation. Global test scores in literacy, science and maths have been falling since 2012, just as the use of tech in schools has been rising. Even if the latter isn’t directly causing the former, it’s clearly not helping pupils. “There’s clear scientific evidence that digital tools impair rather than enhance student learning,” Sweden’s Karolinska Institute, a medical school focusing on research, said in a 2023 statement. Some are benefiting, no doubt. Profiteering tech companies, for a start, which are getting rich and hoovering up our children’s data.
