Pourquoi y a-t-il un gros rocher près du centre du pic de Tycho ? Le cratère Tycho sur la Lune est l’une des structures les plus faciles à observer, visible même à l’œil nu (en médaillon, en bas à droite). Mais au centre de Tycho (en médaillon, en haut à gauche) se trouve quelque chose d’inhabituel : un rocher de 120 mètres. Ce rocher a été photographié à très haute résolution au lever du soleil , au cours de la dernière décennie, par la sonde lunaire Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). L’hypothèse principale concernant son origine est que le rocher a été projeté lors de la formidable collision qui a formé le cratère Tycho il y a environ 110 millions d’années, et qu’il est retombé par hasard juste à côté du centre de la montagne centrale nouvellement formée . Au cours du prochain milliard d’années, les impacts de météores et les tremblements de lune devraient lentement dégrader le centre de Tycho , provoquant probablement la chute du rocher central de 2 000 mètres jusqu’au fond du cratère et sa désintégration.
