Another day, another sentiment measure disappoints...
US consumer confidence fell in April to an almost five-year low on growing pessimism about prospects for the economy and labor market due to tariffs. The Conference Board’s gauge of confidence decreased nearly 8 points to 86, the weakest since May 2020. This was the fifth straight monthly decline, the longest such stretch since 2008.
Worse still, consumer expectations for the next six months plunged to the lowest level since 2011, while a gauge of present conditions also fell.

Guichard added that write-in responses on what topics are affecting views of the economy revealed that tariffs are now on top of consumers’ minds, with mentions of tariffs reaching an all-time high.

This post does 2 things for me:
1. As I read it, I see all the ways that the LLM is influencing my emotions and potentially my opinions, and possibly giving me an unrequested dopamine hit.
2. I told Perplexity what Absolute mode is, and quoted the entire post. Now all I have to do is prompt the LLM to use Absolute Mode to answer my question or write me a poem or whatever.
I tested Perplexity with and without on the same query,
“Write me a poem in the style of Rumi about the veil of illusion.”
It was a relief to be getting the goods without the manipulation and hype.
Anyone else noticing friends who are keeping their new AI friend close at hand?

I am currently testing Qwen3 (1B and 4B) locally with Ollama. It is the small model I was looking for to call MCP tools. While it still a bit dumb in its responses, it successfully calls the tools perfectly. No other model of this size can call tools as effectively.

In the paper, they describe that they effectively use sort of mules to deposit cash into their own bank accounts. So the cash is split distributed and then needs to come back.
The paper is showing that crypto is being used to consolidate it together and get it across borders without the watchful eye of surveillance detecting it and being able to stop it.

Say what you want, but offline ecash payments seem like the best alternative for internet and power outages.
I know we can use satellites, radio, mesh networks, and even send a PSBT to a friend with an online node. But the average joe will probably benefit from just having a small balance for 15-30 spend.
Also, speed wise, is you need to buy food or gas, ecash is probably faster than sending a USB with a PSBT to a friend in another city.
What do you all think?
