Many are asking if this massive Iberian blackout has been caused or contributed to, by the helter-skelter push to install so-called "renewable energy generation" to a level where it has already eclipsed too many carbon sources of Electricity Generation.
The simple answer is ... YES, of course this is what has happened. But the explanation involves concepts linked to both mechanical and electrical engineering that the public doesn't even know exist.
The failure is directly linked to the removal of "inertia" from the entire Grid, when viewed from a Systemic viewpoint.
A modern power grid (in any nation that considers itself 'developed') needs an array (or mix) of different power sources, which are also geographically distributed up and down the territory. Transmission (power) lines then connect them all up into a single system. This distribution helps smooth out the effects of severe weather in certain regions compared to others, located say 150 km away.
Substations are used to divide and isolate one local area from all others. These substations are also needed to reduce the voltage levels down to what the Consumers can safely be given; down from the very high voltages needed to drive power (Amps and Watts) through those long transmission lines suspended (typically) between latticed towers.
Every power grid has to be designed to respond to load disturbances. These disturbances (from some normal level) can be represented as sudden increases, or sudden decreases in demand. In which case, the supply side has to be able to adjust promptly to such changes, because A/C power supplies have to be kept within stipulated minimum and maximum parameters vis-a-vis both voltage levels, and frequency values (around 50 Hertz in UK and Europe, or 60 Hertz in the USA). Otherwise, user equipment could very easily end up damaged.
In every well-designed and 'balanced' power generation system, plenty of "Inertia" is deliberately installed, so that some power sources can continue with kinetic (mechanical) energy while disturbances (such as lightning strikes or power line breakages) can be smoothly accommodated. If you are familiar with the concept of "Fly-Wheels" then this is the analogy you need to study. In systems theory it all means the same thing.
A preponderance of Wind and Solar Power generators lacks inertia. There is no "fly-wheel" effect inherent in their operation. For example, wind just doesn't blow ... because it tends to move air in gusts. And wind can change massively in strength within an hour or less.
Similarly, Solar Panels are highly responsive to even small changes in sunlight intensity. And their outputs can change within seconds. Battery storage can smooth out this sensitivity but we can't yet afford to build battery banks large enough to build the levels of inertia that is inherently provided by gas-fired generators and coal-burning steam generators.
Spain's rather incompetent folly has just demonstrated that we will likely never be able to rely upon any National Power Grid that ideologically replaces too much of its Carbon generating capacity with Wind and Solar just to please the IMF or the W.E.F. Those two green technologies are too reactive to changing atmospheric conditions. That is to say, there is no inertia to be found in the natural elements being used to create electrical power ... via wind and ultra-violet light.
ROUGH ANALOGY: Ever tried washing your hands in a public toilet where the water taps have a button that cuts out the water flow after just a few seconds? Or alternatively the crappy air-dryer that cuts out the hot air drying your hands, inside 4 seconds?
A nation's power grid must be dominated by large-capacity electrical generating facilities that can smoothly ride (roll over) all the fluctuations in total User Demand. Which means that system stability is best served by installing, gas, coal, and nuclear power generation as a base layer. On top of which, Solar and Wind generation can then be added ... but only up to a certain minority level (perhaps no more than 20 percent of total).
