'Moordkamp' Mexico was trainingsplek voor kartels, geen massagraf gevonden
Het 'moordkamp dat vorige maand' werd aangetroffen in het Mexicaanse dorp Teuchitlán, was lange tijd een trainingskamp voor kartels. Dat heeft de Mexicaanse openbare aanklager bekendgemaakt. In het kamp werden er botresten, honderden schoenen, drie crematoria en kogelhulzen gevonden.
Een belangengroep voor de tienduizenden vermisten uit Mexico besloot vorige maand na een anonieme tip een kijkje te nemen op het terrein. De ontdekkingen veroorzaakten veel ophef; de politie zou namelijk nog geen zes maanden eerder het kamp al hebben onderzocht.
De politie bevestigde toen al dat het terrein door het kartel werd gebruikt. Agenten arresteerden tien mensen en bevrijdden twee gijzelaars. Ook werd een lichaam gevonden dat in plastic was gewikkeld.
Maar kennelijk was het terrein verder niet goed onderzocht. Zo ontstond de indruk dat de lokale overheid mogelijk probeerde de verdere activiteiten in het kamp in de doofpot te stoppen. Vervolgens nam de federale politie het onderzoek over. Door de vele botresten, kledingstukken, schoenen en andere persoonlijke spullen werd gevreesd dat er massagraven op het terrein lagen.
Geen massagraven gevonden
Ondanks de vondst van drie crematoria, zijn er volgens het OM geen aanwijzingen gevonden dat er lichamen zijn verbrand. Behalve het lichaam in september zijn er geen nieuwe lichamen gevonden, zegt de openbaar aanklager Gertz vandaag.
Het kamp werd sinds 2021 gebruikt als trainingslocatie voor de georganiseerde misdaad, zegt Gertz. "Mensen die door het kartel werden geworven, trainden bij het kamp en opereerden daarvanuit."
De bendeleden die vanuit het kamp opereerden, hoorden bij het machtige kartel Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Deze groep wordt door de politie verdacht van het gedwongen rekruteren van jongeren. Jalisco, de staat waar Teuchitlán ligt, is de staat met het hoogste aantal vermissingen in het land.
Twee activisten vermoord
Er zijn naar aanleiding van de nieuwe ontdekkingen vijftien verdachten opgepakt, onder wie drie politieagenten uit een buurdorp en een recruiter voor het kartel.
De gevonden kledingstukken en andere objecten zijn gefotografeerd. Het OM hoopt dat familieleden van vermisten de spullen herkennen. In de afgelopen decennia werden veel jonge mensen door de kartels in Mexico ontvoerd. 127.000 mensen worden vermist.
Deze maand werden twee activisten van de belangengroep die het kamp in maart ontdekten, vermoord. Het zijn de 43-jarige María del Carmen Morales en haar 26-jarige zoon Jaime Daniel Ramírez Morales. Wie er achter zit, is niet duidelijk.
De autoriteiten zeggen niet uit te sluiten dat hun dood te maken heeft met het onderzoekswerk dat ze deden.
