Thanks for the explanation, Matthew. I am a Bitcoin only pleb that hates ordinals and inscriptions, but I can see both sides of this issue. I think the limits on op_return is what led to jamming the segregated data with garbage. Doing the same with op_return would have been less harmful to the block chain and node runners. As such, I see the merit of trying to push garbage into the op_return format which can be more easily pruned and ignored.

I guess we just disagree on the approach, either way thank you for actually engaging with me on this discussion, it’s been hard.
for me, this indicates the extreme nascency of the monetary network, and it also ties into misconceptions about bitcoin’s trajectory and purpose.
the sub-1k sat utxos (I am guessing) are probably mostly due to actual transactions of this size being sent around since inception? the actual amount and rate of increase which comes from data anchoring is a fraction. (total utxo bloat is a different story, but if most of that is coming from standardized shitcoining doesn’t it negate the entire argument of aligning incentives?)
altering standardness in anticipation of further growth in non-standard outputs is putting the cart before the horse.

After the 2025 Playoff field was finalized, I wrote a follow-up post highlighting how SRS can differ from win-loss record. The 37-45 Miami Heat made the 2025 Playoffs (and were unsurprisingly sent home quickly). One would think a 37-45 team would have qualified for my worst playoff team survey... but the Heat actually had a positive SRS and Net Rating. Go figure. I examined whether they had the worst record of a positive SRS/Net playoff team (spoiler: they did).
