I just wanted to share some big wonderful feeling I am having around the book The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. On February 23, 2025, I started the Artist's Way. It is a 12 week program centered around daily morning journaling, meditative walks, and weekly artist dates. Each week I've read another chapter from the book.
Early in the program I honestly did not think I would finish it, the journaling kicked up a lot of emotions and memories I had repressed and it was hard, slow, painful work. Slowly the journal pages started flowing better, becoming easier to write as I learned to just listen to that voice within and blurt whatever onto the page. At first I did not even do the artist dates, they seemed silly and stupid. But even in the book, she harped on how important it was to do the artist dates even when it seems silly and stupid. So I started doing them, just making silly dick-focused pictures and letting myself be silly and stupid and honestly it was so much fun!
At a friend's suggestion I started using my artists dates as time to meditate on the environment around me. Something I've been struggling to connect with because it's rough out here in the dessert and I was not particularly enjoying it. But having dedicated time to focus on looking for all the adorable tiny flowers amongst the rocks and the sand has been really joyful. Researching all these plants I'm unfamiliar with has been great for deepening my respect and reverence for the nature around me and has become a fun series of art as well.
The daily walks are so good for me, and something I just hadn't been doing. Too caught up in the stress of work, I'd sometimes just hunker down hunched over my computer for days at a time ignoring my body. Just short 20 minute walks every day, and suddenly my body's energy is flowing for me in a way I haven't experienced in years. I'm feeling healthier, I've lost weight without particularly trying to, and my creativity is electric.
I do not particularly identify as an artist, in the same way I haven't particularly identified as a psychic. I'm an economist. But I could see how reinvigorating my intuitive skills would help in developing creative perspectives on my macroeconomic models, so I thought this might pay off. God is surely good because I was unaware of how much I needed this! As my intuition has grown, I joined this Psy Gym too and now yes, maybe I do identify as a psychic! As my creativity has grown, I'm spontaneously painting rocks just for the joy of seeing the color reflected in the light, and now yes, maybe I do identify as an artist!!
I am so astounded by the changes that have taken place within me that I've been evangelizing for the Artist's Way everywhere I can these days. I've bought it for friends. Whatever it is in your life that you're stuck in, this process will help you become unstuck I am sure of it. And also, you'll probably discover even more capabilities than you ever thought possible! I am truly in awe. Today is the start of week 11 for me, and it is only a 12 week program. Already I think I might just turn around and do it all over again immediately once I finish.
