Is there a LinkedIn like professional network or job board built on Nostr? If not, is anyone building one or thinking about it? Anything concrete beyond jobstr like hashtags?
I know a lot of folks here think of LinkedIn as one of the cringiest platforms ever created, but given its current level of enshittification, there's certainly room to replace it. Plus, it would do wonders to advocate for Nostr outside of BTC and crypto circles and attract folks that otherwise wouldn't touch Nostr. As far as I can tell, ActivityPub doesn't have a LinkedIn alternative either, so Nostr could be the first decentralised LinkedIn replacement, or at least one of the first open alternatives.

Popular issue: devs wanting to give users the "best UX" without considering potential attacks. Sometimes it's not even pre-buffering, they're just trying to load meta tags to render previews (Schema.org, Open Graph, Twitter Cards, etc.).
Battle story: I was part of a war room at a big marketplace (not Amazon) that kept going down, was being flagged on popular platforms for issuing too many requests, and also tanked its SEO for "no reason".... When I say big, I mean core web services and microfrontends running on Kubernetes clusters with 1000+ nodes.
Turns out their software was not only allowing links to anything in the comments, but also trying to render previews. If I’m not mistaken, the solution was to filter and audit comment links, as well as limit preview rendering to around 3 links per page. It took months before links to the website started showing up on the first page of Google again, likely tens of millions of USD lost in sales at their scale.

Not an ad, but I use Redbubble a lot to make stickers and all sorts of other things for the communities and meetups I'm involved with. Some folks complain about the quality of certain products or say the platform is too greedy with artists trying to sell their work there... But it works really well for me and their stickers are good (I have 4 years old stickers on my laptop still going strong). They deliver quickly, and their online system is pretty much foolproof, or at least I haven't managed to mess up a batch of stickers yet (and this is coming from a not artistically inclined dev): https://redbubble.com
One nice aspect is that you can add your designs to a "store" and let people buy stickers themselves. Not much money to be made, but it's always fun when someone buys a sticker from one of my UK-based communities from another continent. I always wonder why they do it.

Hey, sorry for not replying earlier. Somehow I didn’t get a notification.
I’m 100% with you. My licensing concerns aren’t about imposing "freedom" on users (FSF or US-style, like every time a country has a natural resource they need 🤣), regardless of my ragebait “communism” language above. It’s about safeguarding the open nature of Nostr against patent litigation.
The more I get to know the Nostr ecosystem, the more patent litigation concerns me. Other than the NIP repo, nostr:nprofile1qqsrhuxx8l9ex335q7he0f09aej04zpazpl0ne2cgukyawd24mayt8gprfmhxue69uhkcmmrdd3x77pwve5kzar2v9nzucm0d5hszxnhwden5te0wpuhyctdd9jzuenfv96x5ctx9e3k7mf0qydhwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnhv4ehgetjde38gcewvdhk6tc4rdlnm maintains a bunch of libraries used by almost every dev. Other devs also maintain quite popular libraries.
The good news is, as much as we all like to complain about Nostr and its jankiness, a lot of what’s in Nostr consists of novel / patentable ideas, and folks have been sharing and acting with integrity around their IP. Nostr has been the first Bazaar-like project that’s caught my eye in a long time.
The bad news is... the whole scene is set for patent litigation. We have a bunch of smart, young, idealistic people, and a lot of funding coming from, well, folks who aren’t that young or idealistic anymore. Young and idealistic people can be unpredictable, especially when dealt a bad hand, or when their "authority", sense of "control" or hopes of “making it big” are shattered.
Companies, on the other hand, are mostly predictable... If they can find a way to make money, they will.
There’s a reason why the FSF and Apache add all the legalese to their licences and keep specialised lawyers on their payroll. They’ve been through the kind of legal trouble that, as far as I know, Nostr has avoided so far, but likely won’t be able to avoid forever.
I’m 100% with you on how I license my own OSS stuff (Haven is an exception, as utxo had already licensed it under MIT lke most things on Nostr, when I started contributing. I just added the license to thr repo). *GPL works very well to protect the community. The Apache Licence is a great alternative for folks who don’t want to impose viral OSS clauses on forks. It doesn’t add much burden beyond conserving the original NOTICE file and copyright statements. It can also be used in proprietary/closed-source forks without issue, while doing a tremendous job of protecting the project and its community from corporate greed and former contributors going rogue.
This is the direction I’d like core Nostr projects to take. Extra points if the project also enforces a Contributor Licence Agreement or Developer Certificate of Origin. This might all sound unnecessary or annoying in 2025, but it can be enforced automatically in the CI/CD pipeline, and would make the Nostr ecosystem much more resilient.

So Redis is AGPL now... Their "source available" move went about as well as Trump's tariffs. I'm not even going to ask why there isn't more GPL / AGPL software on Nostr (blah, blah, blah, communists... you know, like Red Hat - acquired by IBM for $35 billion - pure communism). Even if imposing open source on forks isn't your thing, I’d at least like to see a well-executed permissive licence like Apache being used more often.
MIT and BSD variants are... idealistic, but not very pratical. Gain a bit of success and patent litigation becomes inevitable. There's a lot of R&D on Nostr that’s vulnerable to patent attacks, and I’d really like to see the community protect itself. Freedom tech meets corporate greed. It has no limits.

Sorry for the long wall of text already, but nostr:nprofile1qqs06gywary09qmcp2249ztwfq3ue8wxhl2yyp3c39thzp55plvj0sgprdmhxue69uhhg6r9vehhyetnwshxummnw3erztnrdakj74c23x6 got me into a philosophical mood... Plus I'm thinking about this a lot lately :).
You are more than correct. Planes are already falling out of the sky and unfortunately its going to get much worse before it gets better.
About paper & pen interviews, I totally agree. I tend to be more than a bit biased towards TDD and XP practices when it comes to development. Someone’s performance on paper, as well as their ability to explain what they did on said paper without the help of any tools, is a good predictor of their fit and performance. While a lot of folks (especially the younger Python/JS crowd that has unsurprisingly embraced vibe coding full force) really dislike my interview style, the truth is: after 20 years doing this for a living, I’ve figured out there's a strong correlation between folks who take a sheet of paper (or its digital equivalent), do some simple upfront analysis, make an effort to figure out requirements, prioritise them, and translate them into clean, functional tests and their performance as developers. They generally outperform everyone else.... Because... Well, they know how to think :).
Plenty of pattern parrots out there are doing well at LeetCode, yet still can’t code their way out of a paperback, despite solving three hard dynamic programming problems in 45 minutes. In theory they can "code" better than me, but they can't think. And I mean this for devs themselves, for QA folks, it’s twice as valid.
Again, this is my bias, but it's not only mine. Kent Beck and Martin Fowler have both written something along these lines:
https://tidyfirst.substack.com/p/forest-and-desert
https://martinfowler.com/bliki/ForestAndDesert.html
Folks who are allergic to fundamentals (i.e., what I call the modern “SPA framework fullstack dev”) won’t be able to figure out requirements, won’t communicate properly, won’t work well in cross-functional teams, and will flat-out refuse to believe there’s a world where requirements are well understood, properly prioritised and tested. They see refactoring as yak shaving and don't see the point of maintaining the structure of the code and keeping your options opened. For them, a healthy architecture is just a bunch of random “guidelines” from old farts like me. And while they may “comply,” they won’t take ownership of it as the living, breathing, evolving thing it is. They are pretty damn good at keeping EMs and PMs happy by moving tickets around, though... And unfortunately, that’s what a lot of people in charge prioritise.
Having said thst. My approach to the desertification problem has evolved. I stopped trying to convince desert dwellers that forests exist. I stopped trying to plant trees in the desert all by myself. (Try to introduce proper practices in the wrong place, and the majority will not only fight against it to the death... You’ll become an annoyance, and they’ll fight against you specifically). Now I look for like-minded folks and work to avoid the desertification of the few forests that are still out there. Outside the forest, I’ll just work the desert way and be done with it. The boy scout principle still applies, but that’s pretty much it for me.
This posture takes a lot of mental strength. Human nature is to get angry, try to fix the world, and stop the damage. But the truth is, shouting at folks to do something they don’t believe in (and don’t think is possible) won’t work. Trying to go the extra mile where it isn’t valued will just burn you out. You’ll get nothing done and ultimately contribute to their perception that you’re full of crap... You will be made an example, the name of the game is proving that there’s no way but their way, and all of your efforts will ultimately only accelerate desertification.
It’s more effective to cultivate existing forests and lend a hand to the few people who are ready to make the transition. It’s sad, but this applies to everything in life. You build something good for yourself, and you help those who are willing to be helped. If you try to help those who don’t want help, or those who claim to but aren’t ready to put in the effort, you’ll only become their scapegoat.
So, ultimately, my message here is: as painful as it is, let the "vibe coders" be. It’s their reality and their path.

Lost battle... Laziness and mediocrity always wins. The sad reality is that we are heading to a world of even worse software than the crap we have today. And the funny thing is... Even with all the layoffs and "efficiency" measure, cost will effectively raise. Writing coding was never the bottleneck of the software lifecycle and the AI trend is only making it worse. We'll have a security and maintenance nightmare to deal with. DORA metrics are already showing some productivity loss despite the "acceleration" that AI brings to the table.

I can't give solid advice on finding balance, as it's something I haven't quite achieved myself. But with the benefit of a few extra years of age (not necessarily wisdom), what I can say is this: a lot of the weight we carry is in our own heads.
When business is bad or you're unemployed, how much time do you spend worrying about it instead of taking action, exercising, or enjoying quality time with your family? What about when you're ill? Or when a family member is?
As I approach my 40s, having "conquered" many of the things society expects from us, I've honestly grown tired of worrying, carrying burdens, constantly overcoming obstacles, and feeling the need to prove myself, whether to society or to myself.
It's funny. I have a feeling the answer doesn’t lie in time management or prioritisation. It's about letting go of the weight you carry, living in the moment, and making a conscious effort to be light-hearted, joyful, and accepting of your nature.
I saw this video years ago and found it impressive:
https://youtube.com/shorts/vfFwmBXB3Ds
Nowadays, I interpret it very differently. Where I once saw time management and granularity, I now see fluidity, self-acceptance, and an embrace of the nature of things. Yes, sometimes the jar is too full, so throw some sand away. But honestly, aside from our worries, the jar is rarely as full as it seems. As I stop trying to control every aspect of life, I notice the golf balls, pebbles, and sand find their own place. You're not in total control. This isn't a game of Tetris. Life still unfolds despite our limitations.
You will get into trouble again and again, and still, things work out. Life is a game that plays us, not the other way around. The only truly wasted time is the time spent trying to predict what’s to come or control what you can't. That includes juggling golf balls in the jar.
The more I make a conscious effort to be present and stop worrying, the easier life feels. Am I managing my time better? Maybe. Maybe not. But it's certainly easier to let priorities find me and be fully present, body and soul, than to keep up all the worrying I used to do.

Good night Nostr! Just a useless post about non-dev stuff, since I haven’t written anything here in a while.
A few months ago, I really got into a productivity app called Forest. It basically blocks apps on your phone so you don’t procrastinate or get distracted. It gamifies focus by blocking your phone while you “plant virtual trees”. If you use your phone, the tree you’re planting withers… and nobody wants to kill a virtual tree, right? 🤣
Well, it worked quite well for a while. Then I started creating my own mind games, like arranging the trees in patterns, hosting shared focus sessions, and so on. Never underestimate my ability to invent novel ways to distract myself from what I actually have to do!

TrueNAS isn't picky at all. Any old hardware that you have around with either an external thunderbolt DAS or a few NVEME SSDs to PCI-E adapter will work fine, for much cheaper than those pre-build NAS. Just make sure to add plenty of ram for ZFS. I dont know any NAS brands that aren't overpriced, and their "added value" is the horrible software, if you are wiping out their OS for TrueNAS, DIY hardware is likely the way to go. If you do find some good "pre-built" TrueNAS hardware, please do share though :)
