So, in the end, why is the node will be useful for?
Why don't we only allow a deal between miners and core dev directly to avoid the node voice and verification ? It would be more efficiently and convenient, don't you think ?
The "usage" by miners of the blockchain would perfectly fit the "validation" done by miners too.
It is a question of equality, node must stay independent as miners are as dev are. if one consider the other work just futile it will end with a node that just fit all the shit miner would put on the blockchain.

i like doing things. i am not fond of finishing because then something i have enjoyed is over.
the doing is more important than the finishing. without doing, i cant finish
if i go on a hike, I enjoy the hiking while i am hiking, and don't enjoy some parts if my knee hurts but i still even enjoy myself. i also enjoy completing a hike and the relaxation afterwards.
if the doing is 99% and the finishing is 1% then why not enjoy 100% rather than wanting each thing to be done and over with? it isn't living if i'm rejecting 99% of it.

The way billing works its only for fixed intervals like 1 month, zapping arbitrary amounts would be weird, not impossible though..
