I know people who administer fentanyl safely every day.
The fact that so many other people use fentanyl as "suicide, but with extra steps" does not make it "objectively harmful" and different to comparable painkillers.

Vijf vragen over het nieuwe standpunt van minister Veldkamp over Israël
Het kabinet voert de diplomatieke druk op de Israëlische regering op. Minister Veldkamp van Buitenlandse Zaken wil voorlopig niet verder onderhandelen over de verlenging van een Europees samenwerkingsprogramma met Israël, schrijft hij in een brief aan Kaja Kallas, de buitenlandchef van de Europese Unie.
Veldkamp vindt dat Israël met de humanitaire blokkade van Gaza de mensenrechten en democratische principes niet respecteert. Die principes staan in een verdrag tussen Israël en de EU. "Je hebt het recht om jezelf te verdedigen, maar de proporties lijken nu volledig zoekgeraakt", zei Veldkamp tegen de NOS.
Hij wil dat de EU onderzoek doet naar de naleving van het verdrag. Vijf vragen over het nieuwe, kritische standpunt van minister Veldkamp.
1. Op welk verdrag doelt Veldkamp?
Het EU-Israël Associatieverdrag is een akkoord waarin afspraken staan over handelsvoordelen en andere samenwerkingen tussen de EU en Israël. De EU is de grootste handelspartner van Israël. Het verdrag is gesloten voor zowel een betere economische als politieke samenwerking.
Daar hoort ook een actieplan bij. Daarin staat onder andere dat de EU en Israël samen moeten werken om "de gedeelde waarden van de democratie, de rechtsstaat en respect voor mensenrechten en internationaal humanitair recht te bevorderen".
Op dit moment wordt onderhandeld over dat actieplan, dat eigenlijk al in januari al verlengd had moeten worden.
2. Hoe zet Veldkamp nu druk?
Tot voor kort was diplomatieke druk achter de schermen volgens Veldkamp de beste manier om de Israëlische gijzelaars vrij te krijgen en humanitaire hulp in Gaza te krijgen, maar hij stelt dat de kans op een staakt-het-vuren "buitengewoon is geslonken". En dus is het tijd om op een andere manier de druk op te voeren.
Zolang dat onderzoek loopt "zal Nederland nieuwe samenwerkingen of actieplannen blokkeren die de EU met de regering Netanyahu aan wil gaan", zegt Veldkamp.
Nederland is het eerste land dat dit doet. Spanje en Ierland vroegen eerder om het hele verdrag op te schorten, maar daar moeten alle 27 landen het mee eens zijn.
3. Wat betekent het voor Israël?
Voor nu heeft het nog geen consequenties waar Israël meteen iets van merkt. Het hangt ervan af of het onderzoek dat Veldkamp graag wil, er daadwerkelijk komt en wat daaruit blijkt. Op langere termijn kan het wel consequenties hebben. Voor nu is het vooral een politiek signaal aan Israël, dat Nederland altijd heeft gezien als een van zijn trouwste bondgenoten.
Een officiële reactie van Israël is er nog niet. Israëlische media melden er ook niets over. Ook EU-buitenlandchef Kallas heeft nog niet gereageerd. Volgens Veldkamp is zijn Israëlische collega niet blij met de stap van de Nederlandse regering, net als "anderen in de Israëlische regering".
4. Hoe groot is de kans dat andere landen volgen?
Hongarije en Tsjechië blijven Israël steunen, maar steeds meer landen in de EU vinden dat er actie nodig is. "We zijn niet het enige land dat nu zegt: er is hier iets heel ernstigs aan de hand, daar moeten we op gaan reageren", zegt Veldkamp. "We geven een duidelijk signaal af", zegt de minister. Dat wordt ook gezien door zijn Europese collega's en die uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk, zegt hij. "Een aantal Europese collega's overweegt ook zelf hiernaar te kijken."
De buitenlandministers van Ierland, IJsland, Noorwegen, Luxemburg, Slovenië en Spanje hebben zich in een gezamenlijke verklaring uitgesproken over de nieuwe plannen van Israël. Daarin uiten ook zij hun zorgen:
Ook de Franse president Macron vindt dat Israël het recht heeft om een terroristische organisatie te bestrijden, maar dat het "onacceptabel" is dat het land handelt zonder zich aan de regels te houden.
Het plan van Veldkamp is gisteren besproken op een informele bijeenkomst in Warschau van Europese ministers van Buitenlandse Zaken. Vandaag gebeurt dat opnieuw.
5. Hoe reageren hulporganisaties op deze stap van Nederland?
Hulporganisaties die al langere tijd stevige kritiek hebben op het kabinetsbeleid reageren verheugd op de aankondiging van Veldkamp, al had zo'n "eerste stap" volgens hen al veel eerder genomen moeten worden. "Deze koerswijziging is laat, maar beter laat dan nooit", zegt Artsen zonder Grenzen. Save the Children noemt het "fijn dat de minister zich eindelijk wat aan lijkt te trekken van het internationaal humanitair recht".
