Bill Gates haalt uit naar Elon Musk bij verhoging donaties aan goede doelen
Bill Gates wil in de komende twintig jaar 200 miljard dollar (nu bijna 178 miljard euro) uitgeven aan de bestrijding van kindersterfte, infectieziekten als polio en malaria en vermindering van armoede wereldwijd. Dat is een verdubbeling van het bedrag dat zijn goededoelenstichting The Gates Foundation de afgelopen 25 jaar uitgaf.
De medeoprichter van het softwarebedrijf Microsoft zegt dat hij daarmee zijn plan versnelt om bijna zijn hele vermogen aan goede doelen uit te geven. Over twintig jaar is hij 90. Hij verwacht dat er dan andere rijke mensen zijn die zijn liefdadigheidswerk zullen overnemen.
"Ik weet nog dat ik als kind boeken van Dickens las waarin mensen doodgingen aan de tering en ik niet wist wat dat was", legt Gates zijn ambities uit. "Ik droom ervan dat als mensen het woord malaria zien, ze ook zeggen 'Wat is dat?'"

Bij de presentatie van zijn plannen zette Gates zich af tegen president Trump en collega-miljardair Elon Musk die verantwoordelijk zijn voor de bezuiniging van 80 procent op de begroting van USAID. Het budget van die Amerikaanse overheidsorganisatie voor mensen in nood wereldwijd bedroeg in 2023 nog bijna 30 miljard euro.
Gates denkt dat als gevolg van de bezuinigingen op USAID de sterftecijfers wereldwijd de komende vier tot zes jaar fors zullen toenemen, met name onder kinderen. "Het beeld dat de rijkste man ter wereld verantwoordelijk is voor de dood van de armste kinderen in de wereld is niet fraai", zegt Gates in een interview met The Financial Times.
Musk reageerde op X. "Gates is een grote leugenaar", schreef hij zonder dat toe te lichten. Musk geeft volgens het Amerikaans tijdschrift Forbes minder dan 1 procent van zijn vermogen aan goede doelen, Gates meer dan 20 procent.
Niet alle gaten vullen
Gates wijst erop dat niet alleen de Amerikaanse regering de geldkraan dichtdraait, ook Europese landen geven minder uit aan armoedebestrijding nu de oorlogsdreiging thuis meer geld vraagt. Hij waarschuwt dat zelfs zijn miljarden niet de gaten kunnen dichten die anderen laten vallen. "Daarvoor is het aantal urgente problemen die ik kan oplossen te groot."
Gates werd als medeoprichter en topman van Microsoft steenrijk. Zijn persoonlijk vermogen wordt op bijna 270 miljard euro geschat. In 2000 richtte hij samen met zijn toenmalige vrouw de goededoelenstichting The Gates Foundation op. De Amerikaanse superbelegger Warren Buffett sloot zich daar later bij aan.
Sindsdien gaf de stichting zo'n 88 miljard euro uit aan de bestrijding van aids, tbc en malaria. In verband met het jubileum van de stichting liet Gates zich door meerdere media interviewen.
