ยกตัวอย่างเช่น “ฉันนี่มันโง่จริงๆ!” “ทำไมเรื่องง่ายๆแค่นี้ฉันยังพลาดได้!?” “ไม่มีใครเขาอยากอยู่ใกล้ๆคนอย่างฉันหรอก!” เป็นต้น

ความคิดเชิง “ต่อว่าตัวเอง” เหล่านี้สามารถทำให้เราเสียใจ ท้อแท้ กังวลใจ หดหู่ ฯลฯ ได้ง่ายๆ ซึ่งแน่นอนครับว่าหลายคนก็ไม่ได้อยากให้ตัวเองต้องตกอยู่ในห้วงความรู้สึกเหล่านี้

ด้วยเหตุนี้ หลายคนจึงพยายามที่จะกำจัดความคิดเชิง “ต่อว่าตัวเอง” เหล่านี้ แต่ไม่ว่าพวกเขาจะพยายามขนาดไหน ความคิดเชิง “ต่อว่าตัวเอง” ก็ไม่ยอมหายไปจากใจพวกเขาอยู่ดี (หรือต่อให้หายไป มันก็เป็นการหายไปเพียงชั่วคราวเท่านั้น พอเวลาผ่านไปสักพัก ความคิดเหล่านี้ก็ปรากฏขึ้นมาในใจพวกเขาอีก)

ทำความเข้าใจว่าอะไรคือประโยชน์ของความคิดเหล่านี้ ทำความเข้าใจว่าความคิดเหล่านี้ปรากฏขึ้นมาในใจเราครั้งแรกเมื่อไหร่ ทำความเข้าใจว่าอะไรคือสาเหตุที่ทำให้ใจเรา “ผลิต” ความคิดเหล่านี้ขึ้นมาตั้งแต่แรก

หากเราได้ใช้เวลาทำความเข้าใจความคิดเชิง “ต่อว่าตัวเอง” อย่างจริงจัง เราก็จะพบว่าความคิดเหล่านี้ไม่ได้มีเจตนาที่ต้องการจะ “ลงโทษ” หรือ “ทำร้าย” เรา

ตรงกันข้าม เราจะพบว่าความคิดเชิง “ต่อว่าตัวเอง” เหล่านี้มีเจตนาที่จะ “ปกป้อง” เราด้วยซ้ำไป (เช่น “ถ้าฉันต่อว่าตัวเองแรงๆไปก่อน และวันหนึ่ง ฉันโดนคนอื่นต่อว่าแรงๆบ้าง ฉันจะเจ็บปวดเพราะคำพูดของคนอื่นน้อยลง เพราะฉันคุ้นชินกับคำพูดต่อว่าแรงๆเหล่านี้แล้ว” “ฉันต่อว่าตัวเองแรงๆเพราะฉันกลัวว่า ถ้าฉันไม่ทำแบบนี้ ฉันจะขี้เกียจ ฉันจะประมาท ฉันจะไม่เกิดการพัฒนา” เป็นต้น)

ฉะนั้น เมื่อเราเข้าใจเจตนาที่อยู่เบื้องหลังความคิดเชิง “ต่อว่าตัวเอง” แล้ว สิ่งที่เราสามารถทำได้ในขั้นตอนต่อไปคือการปรับเปลี่ยนคำพูดของความคิดเหล่านี้ให้ทำหน้าที่ “ปกป้อง” เราได้มีประสิทธิภาพมากขึ้น (เช่น จากเดิมที่เราพูดกับตัวเองว่า “ทำไมเรื่องง่ายๆแค่นี้ฉันยังพลาดได้!?” เราก็อาจจะเปลี่ยนคำพูดดังกล่าวเป็น “นี่คือข้อผิดพลาดที่ไม่น่าเล็ดลอดผ่านสายตาของฉันไปได้ ฉันจะต้องมีสมาธิมากกว่านี้!” เป็นต้น)

การทำแบบนี้อาจจะไม่ได้ทำให้ความคิดเชิง “ต่อว่าตัวเอง” หายไปก็จริง แต่มันสามารถช่วยให้ความคิดเชิง “ต่อว่าตัวเอง” เหล่านั้นไม่ได้มีลักษณะที่ “โบยตี” เราด้วยความรุนแรงเหมือนเดิมอีกแล้วครับ
