Curator Kouoh (58) van Biënnale Venetië plotseling overleden
De Kameroens-Zwitserse curator Koyo Kouoh is op 58-jarige leeftijd plotseling overleden. Ze zou volgend jaar als eerste zwarte vrouw de prestigieuze Biënnale van Venetië leiden.
Kouoh was curator van het Zeitz Mocaa-museum in Kaapstad, een van de meest toonaangevende musea voor moderne kunst van Afrika. Ze had internationaal naam gemaakt als voorvechter van de Pan-Afrikaanse kunststroming, die de gedeelde identiteit van artiesten van dat continent centraal stelt. Ze eerder al een eigen kunstcentrum opgezet in Dakar en had tentoonstellingen samengesteld van Rusland tot de VS en Groot-Brittannië.
In december kondigde de Biënnale aan dat Koyo de volgende editie zou gaan leiden, van mei tot november 2026 in de Italiaanse stad. Ze noemde dat een unieke eer en privilege. "Ik hoop een tentoonstelling te kunnen maken die betekenis kan bieden aan de wereld waarin we nu leven - en nog belangrijker: de wereld die we willen maken."
Kouoh zou over anderhalve week de titel en het thema van de 61ste Biënnale bekendmaken. Het is niet duidelijk waaraan ze is overleden.
'Immense leegte '
De Biënnale schrijft dat haar overlijden "een immense leegte achterlaat" bij iedereen die haar "ongekende menselijke en intellectuele bevlogenheid heeft mogen meemaken". Ook de Italiaanse premier Meloni heeft haar condoleances aangeboden.
"Terwijl ze als een komeet door het firmament raasde, ging gisteravond plotseling het licht van Koyo Kouoh uit", reageert het Brusselse kunstmuseum Bozar. Momenteel is daar een door Kouoh samengestelde tentoonstelling te zien. "Net als zoveel van haar vrienden en collega's zijn we geschokt door de onverwachte verdwijning van deze briljante, ontzagwekkende vrouw, altijd zo vol ideeën, grenzeloze energie en onbedwingbare vreugde."
De Biënnale wordt zoals de naam al aangeeft om het jaar gehouden, in 1895 was de eerste editie. Deelnemende landen stellen nieuwe kunst aan de wereld voor in eigen paviljoenen. Voor Nederland wordt deze editie kunstenaar Dries Verhoeven afgevaardigd.
