Oud-minister Bot mag halfjaar niet rijden vanwege aanrijden meisje
Oud-minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Bot heeft een rijontzegging van zes maanden opgelegd gekregen voor het veroorzaken van een verkeersongeluk. Ook kreeg hij een voorwaardelijke taakstraf van 120 uur.
De 87-jarige reed in 2022 tegen een 14-jarig meisje aan toen hij met de auto over de stoep reed. Ze brak haar neus en been. Het ongeluk gebeurde aan de Badhuisweg in Den Haag. Bot maakte met zijn auto bij het wegrijden uit een parkeervak een stuurbeweging naar rechts, waarna de auto de stoep op reed. Volgens Bot deed hij dit omdat hij schrok van een andere auto. Zijn voet zou hebben vastgezeten achter het gaspedaal, waardoor hij niet op tijd kon remmen.
De rechter acht dit niet bewezen. Zo zijn er camerabeelden van het ongeval en daarop was geen andere auto te zien. Ook is volgens de rechtbank niet bewezen dat hij het gas niet kon loslaten. Daar is in het onderzoek achteraf geen bewijs voor gevonden.
De rechtbank vindt dat Bot niet alles heeft gedaan om het ongeluk te voorkomen, meldt Omroep West. Zo had hij volgens de rechter kunnen uitwijken, of had hij kunnen toeteren om het slachtoffer te waarschuwen.
Straf valt zwaarder uit
Het Openbaar Ministerie eiste twee weken geleden een voorwaardelijke taakstraf van 120 uur en een voorwaardelijke rijontzegging van zes maanden. Daarnaast wilde het OM dat Bot 3000 euro zou overmaken aan Slachtofferhulp.
De rechtbank legde dus een onvoorwaardelijke rijontzegging op. Volgens de rechter is hierbij gekeken naar de ernst van het strafbare feit en de mate van verwijtbaarheid. De boete is niet opgelegd.
Bekend diplomaat
De oud-politicus was onder meer topambtenaar op het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken en de Nederlandse ambassadeur in Turkije. Ook was hij tien jaar lang de Nederlandse ambassadeur bij de Europese Unie.
In 2003 keerde Bot terug naar Den Haag, waar hij Jaap de Hoop Scheffer opvolgde als minister van Buitenlandse Zaken. Na de val van kabinet-Balkenende II (2003-2006) trad Bot toe tot het overgangskabinet. Tot 2007 bleef hij minister van Buitenlandse Zaken.

Prior to end of August you've got an eyeball variance of +/- 500 per day at the 95% confidence interval, superimposed on a linear trend
That started in January and lasted for 8 months
