Hackers hebben 's werelds grootste handelsplatform voor crypto-valuta Coinbase aangevallen. De hackers dreigen de buitgemaakte gegevens openbaar te maken, als ze niet de geëiste 20 miljoen dollar (17,9 miljoen euro) krijgen.
Coinbase zegt niet op de eis in te gaan. Volgens het bedrijf waren de hackers van plan om een lijst van klanten aan te leggen. Die klanten zouden vervolgens worden benaderd door de hackers en hun handlangers, die zich zouden voordoen als medewerkers van Coinbase.
Babbeltruc
De criminelen zouden de klanten willen overhalen om hun crypto-valuta over te dragen. Oftewel een babbeltruc, maar dan in de crypto-wereld.
Coinbase zegt dat van een kleine groep klanten gegevens zijn gestolen. Het zou gaan om rekeningnummers, bsn-nummers en gegevens van rijbewijzen en paspoorten. Inloggegevens en toegangssleutels tot crypto zouden niet zijn buitgemaakt.
Coinbase looft een beloning uit van 20 miljoen dollar voor informatie die leidt tot het oppakken van de hackers.
Hackers proberen steeds vaker zwaktes te vinden bij crypto-platforms op het internet. In februari werd voor 1,5 miljard dollar aan crypto gestolen bij de populaire beurs Bybit.
Volgens Coinbase hebben criminelen helpdesk-medewerkers omgekocht die buiten de Verenigde Staten werken. Op die manier werden klantgegevens buitgemaakt. Personeel dat erbij was betrokken, is onmiddellijk ontslagen, zegt Coinbase.
