Bahia registered a significant reduction in HIV and Aids detection rates, placing it below the national average, according to the HIV/AIDS Epidemiological Bulletin 2024, released by the Ministry of Health. In 2023, the state recorded 2,665 new HIV cases, representing 5.7% of the total Brazilian cases. The detection rate was 17.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, lower than the national average of 21.8. In terms of Aids cases, there were 14.2 per 100,000 inhabitants, while the national average reached 17.8. The mortality rate for Aids in Bahia was 3.3 per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the national average of 3.9. The reduction is also reflected in mortality rates, according to official data. Despite this, the data reveals significant disparities. The epidemic also presents a concerning racial divide: 63.2% of HIV cases were registered among black people. Specifically in 2023, 46,495 HIV infection cases were reported in Brazil, representing a 4.5% increase from the previous year. Another point worth noting is the national profile of infections by gender. Among individuals 13 years or older, the main exposure category for men was male-to-male sex, which accounted for 52.8% of cases. For women, the main exposure category was heterosexual sex, corresponding to 86.4% of cases. PrEP is especially recommended for key populations with higher vulnerability. The Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) has stood out as one of the main prevention strategies adopted by the Ministry of Health. Available free of charge in the SUS since 2017, PrEP combines tenofovir and emtricitabine medications, with an efficacy of over 90% in preventing HIV infection when used correctly. By the end of 2023, over 100,000 Brazilians had started using the prophylaxis, solidifying the country as a reference in Latin America. PrEP is especially recommended for key populations with higher vulnerability, such as men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender people, sex workers, and serodiscordant couples. In Bahia, its expansion has contributed to the decline in infection rates and reinforces the role of combined prevention, which includes biomedical, behavioral, and structural strategies. The advances, challenges, and actions aimed at combating HIV/AIDS among populations with higher social and epidemiological vulnerability will be discussed in Salvador by renowned specialists at the 7th National Meeting of Projects Supported by the Positive Fund, from May 25 to 29. The event will bring together 41 civil society organizations and take place at the Training Center for Leaders (CTL).
