The song's success followed an unusual timeline, first breaking into the UK Top 10 in 1987 before taking nearly two years to climb to #7 on the US Billboard charts in 1989. This delayed success came largely through MTV's heavy rotation of the music video, which featured cavewomen dancers and Flintstones-inspired visuals that completely recontextualized the song's serious undertones into a lighthearted dance craze.
Co-writer Randy Jacobs later revealed the stark disconnect between the song's reception and its intended meaning: what audiences embraced as a feel-good dance anthem was actually a metaphorical warning about nuclear destruction.
