De Tromp, vlaggenschip van de NAVO-vloot, weer terug in Den Helder
Na vijf maanden heeft het marineschip Zijner Majesteits Tromp weer aangemeerd in Den Helder. Familie, geliefden en vrienden wachtten de bemanningsleden vanochtend vroeg op.
Het schip hoort bij een speciaal vlootverband van de NAVO dat actief is op de Noordzee, de Oostzee en de Atlantische Oceaan.
"We gingen in januari richting de Oostzee", zegt commandant Dennis Oorburg. "De opdracht die we daar hadden, was het veilig houden van de kritieke infrastructuur tussen de Baltische Staten en de Europese landen aan de andere kant." De Tromp is op verschillende plekken geweest. "Zowel bij de Baltische Staten, maar ook een langere tijd rond IJsland en Groenland."
Begin dit jaar werd de Tromp het vlaggenschip van de snelle reactiemacht op zee, die bestaat uit militairen van alle NAVO-landen die snel ingezet kunnen worden.
'Een mooie tijd'
"Vijf maanden is best lang", zegt een van de bemanningsleden. Hij is het hoofd van de technische dienst en staat samen met zijn partner op de kade. "We hebben goed contact gehad." Een ander bemanningslid is zichtbaar ontroerd om haar familie en vrienden weer te zien. Zij was aan boord als verpleger. "Het was een mooie tijd, maar ik ben ook weer blij om terug te zijn."
Weer een ander bemanningslid staat bij zijn vrouw en twee kinderen. Hij maakt al zeven jaar zulke reizen en merkt dat ze steeds langer worden. "Het is niet meer zoals vroeger. Toen draaiden we voornamelijk oefeningen en ben je maar een maandje weg, soms iets langer. Nu zie je de tendens dat er grotere reizen in het verschiet liggen, ook vanwege de dreiging waar we mee te maken hebben."
Toen het schip binnenvoer, werd er op de kade en het schip druk gezwaaid. Eenmaal aan wal volgden natuurlijk vele omhelzingen:
"Wat deze reis ook bijzonder maakte is dat ik opnieuw vijf maanden met mijn bemanning op pad ben geweest, nadat zij vorig jaar zeven maanden op reis waren geweest", zegt Oorburg.
De lange reizen hebben volgens de commandant zowel impact op de 200 mensen aan boord als op het thuisfront. "Daar gaat het leven door. Het is ons werk en dat hoort erbij, maar dat maakt het niet vanzelfsprekend. Het is iets wat je samen aan boord doormaakt en waar je dagelijks aandacht voor hebt." Als blijk van waardering krijgt de bemanning dan ook de Herinneringsmedaille Internationale Missies.
Afschrikkend effect
Toen het schip begin januari uit Den Helder vertrok, werd bekend dat het de leiding kreeg over de groep schepen van de NAVO. De zichtbare aanwezigheid van de NAVO-vloot moest een afschrikkend effect hebben, na meerdere incidenten.
Zo werden eind vorig jaar een stroomkabel en vier datakabels beschadigd in de zee tussen Finland en Estland. De Finse autoriteiten noemden het "ernstige sabotage" en vermoeden Russische betrokkenheid.
"We zorgen ervoor dat de NAVO-belangen veilig gehouden worden en geven daarmee ook steun aan NAVO-partners die zich ernstig bedreigd voelen, vanuit onder andere Rusland", vertelt Oorburg. Dat doen ze onder andere door de schepen in hun buurt in de gaten te houden. "We zijn continu bezig met wat er om ons heen gebeurt, om te voorkomen dat we verrast worden."
Volgens de commandant is het deels te vergelijken met een toename van diefstallen in een winkelstraat. "Met de aanwezigheid van politie probeer je het fenomeen dan terug te dringen, in plaats van direct in te grijpen."
Tijdens de NAVO-top in Den Haag eind volgende maand ligt de Tromp voor de Nederlandse kust. Een deel van de Noordzee is dan verboden gebied.
