Leaders of the Landless Workers' Movement (MST) claim that Agriculture Minister Paulo Teixeira has shown over the past two years and almost six months of government that he is not up to the challenges of the job and are demanding his resignation. They intend to increase pressure on the government to replace Teixeira. The president and the minister will meet on Thursday (29) with MST members in an settlement in Paraná, where they will hear demands. Teixeira told Folha that he is surprised by the observations of MST leaders, who have been regularly meeting with representatives of the group and that all of his ministry's goals are on track. The landless and the government have had a increasingly tense relationship since the beginning of 2023. In the first year of Lula's presidency, in the face of the realization that the Bolsonaro government had dismantled agrarian reform actions, the MST had a more tolerant attitude towards the management that had helped elect. However, disagreements gained strength from 2024, with demands for more settlements and an increase in the PAA (Program for the Acquisition of Food from Family Farming). The minister pointed out budgetary difficulties inherited from the Bolsonaro period. Jaime Amorim, a national director and a historical militant of the MST, says that the landless do not see a purpose in dialoguing with Teixeira after successive demands without effective results, in their view. Last week, Amorim decided not to meet with the minister in Petrolina (PE), as he did not want to legitimize the appearance of normalcy in relations with the rural movements that the minister is trying to convey. He says that this attitude will become a trend in the next period. Amorim defines the minister, a PT deputy on leave, as one of the 'best parliamentarians in the country', but in his assessment, 'does not understand agrarian reform and has no interest in carrying it out'. One of the main disagreements between the MST and the minister is related to the number of settlements and the pace of agrarian reform. The landless criticize the inclusion of families in regularization or recognition of possession processes in statistics on the creation of settlements and say that only those who have gained new lands should be counted. 'They are falsifying numbers, creating a logic that anyone who knows a little about our area knows is not real', says Amorir. 'I was in meetings with Lula, and he always talks the same thing (...) It seems that the main quality of his team is to create numbers that are not real', he adds. By the end of 2024, the ministry announced that 71,414 families had been settled that year. The MST contested the data, including in a meeting with the president. The criticism was incorporated by the ministry, which began to release separate data on new settlements. However, the landless still criticize the numbers released and say that part of these new settlements did not have their processes of regularization fully concluded - which means that their residents, for example, cannot join credit programs. Teixeira is also criticized by the landless for what they see as difficulties in fighting for more resources in the budget for agrarian reform. 'The minister is not a partner because he does not put the real needs of the process in the budget', evaluates Amorim. 'There is a lack of resources in the government for agrarian reform. And the minister always tries to discredit, even in front of the president. Saying there is no problem with funds, that there is no problem with structure. And in fact, agrarian reform is practically paralyzed (...) It's over. In this discussion of agrarian reform, he has not been able to effectively place himself and achieve the goals', he says. Teixeira says he works hard to meet the goals, which he says are on track, and maintains constant dialogue with the landless. He highlights that he has absorbed the MST's criticisms regarding agrarian reform data and that today he can say that the pace of new settlements is in line with what was promised by the government. 'When we launched the Terra da Gente program, we committed to 60,000 families [settled]. This year, the goal is 30,000 new settlements. We delivered 15,000, we're in the fifth month, going to the sixth. Half of the goal, in half the year', says the minister, who also sent a report to the press office listing individually all new settlements, divided by name, address, size and municipality. The minister also points out the restart of Pronera, the national education program in agrarian reform, which was a demand of the MST, with 15 batches in 2023 and 22 in 2024.

Woke up to her having removed the neck ruff they put on her over night. Would’ve removed it tomorrow anyways but I’m kinda proud of her for managing to do it on her own.
Apart from that, the swelling is down, she’s already moving more on her own in her cubicle and she manages to not leave a mess when handling her natural business. Overall I think she’s doing great.
