The day I consider hiring security for a bitcoin conference is a sign I shouldn’t come.
My experience there always humbles me, in a literal sense. People come up and say how much my content matters.
Rather than take this as an ego boost, it reminds me I have responsibility. It reminds me never to say things online I wouldn’t say in person. It reminds me of the importance of consistency.
I can’t imagine being in a position where I wouldn’t just walk around freely. I practice opsec, so I minimize easily-planned prior threats, but apart from those I think no matter how big your audience is, walking around a bitcoin conference freely seems the right thing to do.
People run into me in elevators, conference walkways, etc. I do minimize my conference appearance and am cautious of my opsec, but once I am out I’ll sign things or take pics with folks who see me and say hi.

Not surprised that Jimmy comes in with the best response. I’ve seen Jimmy walking around multiple conferences with his cowboy hat and everything, so he’s always been fully present. He’s been doing this way longer than me.
I will say that if someone ever punches me at a conference, I’ll likely punch back. I do have a constant subtle stress awareness at conferences when I’m walking around. There’s always a part of me ready to bring out fucking trailer park Lyn and throw down until security shows up.
But one cannot rely on that, since weapons and such do exist. In that sense I do monitor faces for folks who show recognition to me, and potential threats. Fortunately never had the latter.
Bitcoin places are good places. That is the ultimate defense.

It works the same way on GrapheneOS in this regard as the stock OS. it will be on by default for all sellers, allowing people to pay however they want, and sellers will never miss a sale.
by default it will auto-convert to fiat, and sellers can switch that to holding the bitcoin instead. i hope most do that. but they can also use our reserves feature to convert a percentage of incoming sales to bitcoin.

In five years of going to bitcoin conferences, I’ve literally never had a truly bad experience with someone. People who fly out to be at places are almost always reasonable.
To put this in context, I’ve had thousands of brief meetups over the years and nothing truly bad happened even once. The worst outcome was I had someone be slightly awkwardly clingy a few times, but nothing worse. So this is a 99.9% social uptime situation, and even the 0.1% is still okay.
I am kind of at the top end of the gray zone of security. Super-celebs have security teams and don’t walk around on the conference floor. I do personally walk around the place by myself (which yes is a friction as I get dozens of interactions and photo requests and such), and when offered security by the conference to get out, I turn it down since I find it very hectic but manageable and worth it.
People who are negative (and usually anon) online tend to either not go to these events or don’t show their face if they are there. That seems on brand. No skin in the game.
This is a positive space, and I think we’re going to win.

Now that I’ve announced this feature to #NosVegas attendees, I’m excited to announce it more publicly on Nostr!
I’ve recently opened a PR to add NIP-05 domain feeds to Damus iOS. You’ll be able to tap on anyone’s Nostr NIP-05 address on their profile to bring up a feed of all profiles within your trusted network (your follows and their follows) that have an address associated with that domain. The purpose is to help you build trust and discover communities by domain.
What does that really mean?
For organizations that provide Nostr NIP-05 addresses on their domain (such as damus.io and block.xyz) to only employees and self-owned accounts, you’ll be able to see a refined feed of profiles and content from your trusted network that belong to those organizations.
For organizations that provide Nostr NIP-05 addresses to customers on their domain (such as nostrplebs.com and primal.net), you’ll be able to see a refined feed of profiles and content from your trusted network for customers of those organizations.

One of the things that annoys me most is deception.
I live around Atlantic City, and so I do go to restaurants and shows there. They purposely design it so you have to walk through the casino to get there.
In Vegas now. And of course you have to walk through the casino to get to your room, or to leave, each time.
It’s so banal. So obvious.
Also, there are kits of lube and condoms at the mini bar. Just casually there in case you need them. That’s nice and all but I never saw that at a mini bar before across countless other cities and hotels. Seems like a Vegas thing?
