just put a length prefix field at the front of the payload that is encrypted and then tack on a random, but reasonable amount of padding to obscure its real size. and of course make that padding filled with also random bytes, to mitigate any preimage risk of having part of the message literally being the XOR of the byte stream
i doubt there is much compressibility in it but maybe ZSTD compression could find a little redundancy in there as well

This is good input. I’m already starting to think about my own NIP-44 variant, so if you have some ideas to make it better, I am keen to hear. I think the powers of two is the problem. It’s similar with Cashu where the tokens are power of two, so all of a sudden and randomly you have an incredibly long token. I proposed (a prototyped) a way that every amount could have its own public key. But that was rejected because the specific amount would dox you. Easily solution is to have two random amounts add up to the summand you want. Anyway, I did not want to fork my own version of the mint, so did a bunch of logic in my wallet instead. A pain with bugs, but it works.

Yeah, that’s what I am thinking. Even if you derive a PQC key from a nsec, that’s kinda pointless. You can’t more security than what the root will give you.
Interestingly enough, I had a convo about this, with the head of a prominent PQC institute, and he said at a minimum, you need a ‘narrative’ on how you might transition to PQC, should the threat ever become real.
Meanwhile, the normies have their hair on fire about the PQC threat, while their databases are all stored in the clear on the internet protected by password held by a subcontractor.

Yeah, this is super-cool. I can do this with #nostr #safebox - the lightning address is also a NIP-05 address so you can send cashu tokens directly to another #safebox.
I also plan to make this capability completely invisible to the user - the sending safebox determines that the lightning address of the receiver is a safebox, so it will bypass lightning completely and send the tokens directly via a NIP-17-like transport.
The user won't even know that this is happening. They just want to make a private payment.

the algorithm for padding is insane... extending to a power of two... my mute list with its nip-44 encryption made by jumble is over 128kb in size
not surprised that a badly designed algorithm is buggy, nip-04 did not have this problem, all it really needed was a decent randomized padding length extension, using powers of two is just completely bonkers

For the geeks; One direct cause and another potential cause.
Exceeding maximum padding size for NIP44Encrypt and exceeding maximum event size for relay. Now detects and handles appropriately.
This bug had vexed me for months. Proof size can grow unpredictably due to the power of 2 summand. Now I check and split the proof list if the stringification gets past a certain size.
