'I love this poem. Bilbo first sang “The Road Goes Ever On” in the first chapter of The Fellowship of the Ring, but it’s Frodo who later reveals just how deeply this idea shaped Bilbo’s way of seeing the world.
There is such a great comparison of the Road to a great river "You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to."
This idea stayed with me and eventually became the heart of my 2023 illustration, The Road Goes Ever On. I depicted the Road like a winding thread through the map of Middle-earth; running like a river from Bag End to the Lonely Mountain and beyond, connecting distant lands but also people and their stories.
The various details in the landscape take inspiration from Tolkien’s own maps and illustrations, and include references to stories and places found in various parts of Tolkien's Legendarium. It was quite fun trying to include as many little details and references as possible.'
This piece was shortlisted for the Tolkien Society Awards 2024 for Best Artwork.
