I think the DM specs need a 'request conversation' feature that would include some challenge; web-of-trust, pow or lightning/ecash payment.
Once that was setup, messages would flow without that full requirement, peer-to-peer if possible, stored on relays if away.
I haven't kept up-to-date on all the R&D for DMs to know if that's been included or developed.
