A Air Canada e a Southwest se juntaram ao grupo de companhias aéreas que cobram por bagagem despachada. Mas o custo exorbitante dessas taxas extras está provocando a ira de políticos e passageiros.
Ao mesmo tempo, as vendas de malas pequenas o suficiente para caber na cabine do avião estão crescendo.
Esperando de fora do aeroporto de Toronto, no Canadá, Lauren Alexander voou de Boston, nos Estados Unidos, no fim de semana. Para ela, as cobranças adicionais são "ridículas".
"Parece uma pegadinha", disse a jovem de 24 anos. "Você compra a passagem e pensa que vai ser mais barato, então você tem que pagar US$ 200 [aproximadamente R$ 1.100 na conversão atual] extras para despachar uma mala." Para não pagar a taxa, Lauren viajou com uma mochila pequena.
Sage Riley, 27 anos, concorda. Segundo ela, viajar de avião "pode sair caro".

Ascensão de companhias de baixo custo
Houve um tempo em que bagagens despachadas, escolha de assentos e até lanches no avião estavam inclusos em voos comerciais. Mas tudo mudou com a ascensão das companhias aéreas de baixo custo, afirma Jay Sorensen, da consultoria americana de aviação IdeaWorks.
Foi em 2006 que a companhia britânica FlyBe, considerada a primeira do mundo a adotar a prática, passou a cobrar os passageiros para despachar bagagens. Começou com £2 (cerca de R$ 15) para quem pagava adiantado e £4 (cerca de R$ 30) para passageiros que optavam por pagar na hora.
Rapidamente, outras companhias aéreas de baixo custo seguiram o exemplo, e até mesmo as companhias tradicionais acabaram fazendo o mesmo, pelo menos em voos de curta duração.
Em 2008, a American Airlines se tornou a primeira empresa aérea americana a cobrar uma taxa de US$ 15 (R$ 83) pelo despacho de bagagem em voos domésticos.
No Brasil, as companhias iniciaram a cobrança em 2017. Os valores variam de R$ 60 a R$ 160 para despachar a primeira mala.

Sorenson afirma que companhias aéreas tradicionais acharam que não tinham escolha quando elas "começaram a perceber que as empresas de baixo custo estavam oferecendo uma concorrência significativa".
"Elas sentiram que precisavam fazer algo para competir com isso."
Estima-se que o custo global total com taxas extras cobradas por companhias — de bagagens à escolha de assento, acesso a Wi-fi, upgrades, comidas e bebidas — alcance US$ 145 bilhões (R$ 810 bilhões) este ano, o que representa 14% da receita total do setor.
A informação é da Associação Internacional de Transporte Aéreo, que representa a indústria. Para efeito de comparação, no ano passado o custo foi de US$ 137 bilhões (R$ 765 bilhões).
Somente as companhias americanas faturaram US$ 7,27 bilhões (R$ 40,6 bilhões) em taxas de bagagem despachada no ano passado, segundo dados do governo dos Estados Unidos.
Isso ultrapassa o faturamento de US$ 7 bilhões (R$ 39 bi) em 2023 e de US$ 5,76 bilhões (R$ 32 bi) em 2019.
Esses números têm chamado a atenção de políticos em Washington, nos Estados Unidos. Em dezembro do ano passado, executivos das companhias aéreas foram convocados para prestar esclarecimento em um comitê no senado.
Na ocasião, um senador do Partido Democrata chamou as taxas de junk fees, que em português seria algo como "taxas abusivas", e pediu que o governo federal revise esse tipo de cobrança e considere multar as companhias.
A BBC procurou o Departamento de Transporte dos Estados Unidos para comentar o assunto, mas não teve resposta.
Não é de surpreender, portanto, que cada vez mais passageiros tentem viajar levando apenas uma bagagem de mão.
Kirsty Glenn, diretora-geral da fabricante britânica de malas Antler, confirma que a demanda por malas pequenas, que atendam aos limites de tamanho das cabines de avião, tem aumentado.
"Nós temos visto picos enormes de pesquisas online e no nosso site", diz.
Ao comentar sobre o novo modelo de malas de pequena dimensão que sua empresa lançou em abril, Glenn acrescenta: "Vendeu como água! Prova a tendência de viajar apenas com uma bagagem de mão".

"As redes sociais realmente impulsionaram essa ideia de que é preciso ter uma mala que se encaixe nas exigências das companhias aéreas para bagagem de mão", afirma.
Dickenson, que tem cerca um milhão de seguidores na rede social, afirma que seus vídeos sobre malas se tornaram "uma parte central do conteúdo" que ela cria.
"Eu fico impressionada. Eu posso passar semanas e semanas pesquisando uma grande viagem e os vídeos que eu faço sobre isso não chegam nem perto daqueles que eu me gravo comprando uma mala barata, levando ao aeroporto e testado naquelas estruturas de medição e bagagem."

Mas se ter que pagar para despachar a mala já não era suficiente, um número crescente de companhias aéreas agora está cobrando pelas malas de mão.

Outras companhias europeias têm feito cobranças similares para bagagem de mão, como a Easyjet, Norwegian Airlines, Transavia, Volotea, Vueling e Wizzair.
Esse tipo de cobrança tem incomodado o grupo de defesa do consumidor Becu (Organização do Consumidor Europeu), que no mês passado apresentou uma reclamação à Comissão Europeia.
Becu cita uma decisão da Corte Europeia de 2014, que diz que "o transporte de bagagem de mão não pode ser sujeito a um custo adicional, desde que atenda a requisitos razoáveis quanto ao peso e às dimensões, e cumpra as exigências de segurança aplicáveis".
Contudo, o que define esses "requisitos razoáveis" continua sendo uma área cinzenta, que necessita de uma decisão oficial.
Mas, pode haver uma forma diferente de fazer as coisas, como mostra a companhia aérea indiana IndiGo. O CEO, Pieter Eibers, afirma não cobrar para despachar mala.
"A filosofia aqui é diferente", afirma. "Nós não queremos filas longas nem debates infinitos nos portões de embarque sobre o peso da mala. Nós não temos nada disso. Preparamos os nossos aviões em cerca de 35 minutos."

Maybe viruses are what we are told they are, maybe its all a lie. But the ‘no-virus’ movement as it exists online is a glow-op that is designed to run cover for the bioweaponeers who are still waging war upon all of humanity. A large par tof the ‘no-virus’ position is that there is no such thing as a bioweapon, no matter the pathogen, and also that everything that is known (by those curious enough to search for and learn) about the injectable bioweapon is also a lie. They will deny that the proiven gene-transfection and resulting protein production (spike, prion, whatever) is all a lie. And the whole thing is lead by a bunch of click driven influence grifters who have never worked in a lab. Prior to ‘covid’ I was convinced viruses are harmless and that they could not possibly be weaponized. I am now certain I was very wrong. But, the reality is, nobody’s opinion on viruses matter, nor does it matter if they are real or not. With gene-editing technology (mRNA, modRNA, saRNA, CRISPR, etc), they can do it whenever and where ever. Imagine the possibilities with their mRNA produce. Or in livestock. Everyone is just thinking ‘spike protein’ when those were discussed, but it can be things far worse (prions). Anyone who thinks ‘covid’ is truly over, well we aint seen anything yet. Im not saying lockdowns or any shit like that. But the true purpose of the jabs has yet to be shown in the victims.

Welp, I was successful in not only refactoring Nosflare into typscript, but also linking it through Durable Object to create websocket state cooridination (in order to broadcast new events to all clients in real-time), but this creates such a bottleneck and extra hop that the trade-off in speed is not worth it. Basically, with the current iteration of Nosflare, due to Workers being stateless, the websocket state doesn't entirely work so the Workers runtime eventually just force kills the hung worker after 2min. This is pretty much fine as it doesn't impact the actual relay functionality (and I'd be worried if it really took more than 2min to do anything anyway), but it just means the error rate in logs is a false-positive as it looks like 99% lmao

After several years of FOMO, I finally attended HRF's #OsloFreedomForum. I took a friend who's political but not Bitcoiner, so I had the experience of seeing it through someone else's eyes, as well as my own. Obviously there's a lot to unpack: talking face-to-face with activists who are working in real danger is confronting in itself, and hearing their experiences fresh and recent is an emotional and impactful experience.
I was surprised, however, at the large number of Bitcoiners at the conference: it's not a Bitcoin conference, but the HRF (particularly nostr:npub1trr5r2nrpsk6xkjk5a7p6pfcryyt6yzsflwjmz6r7uj7lfkjxxtq78hdpu) has been courting bitcoiners for technical assistance (and, presumably, donations) for several years now and it has resulted in a fascinating intersection. Those present are builders, not (just?) talkers. My non-bitcoiner friend noted the remarkable humility of those present: an insightful comment.
Of all the discussions I had, the one which haunts me most is a conversation with Peter McCormack (ex- WBD, now rejuvinating his home town and trying to raise awareness of UK's pressing misgovernance issues). To paraphrase: "Where are the Bitcoiners improving the world? Wasn't that what this was about?". In a context of three days' exposure to people who are dedicating their lives to something much bigger than software, this question really affected me.
I was expecting to leave the conference with a list of software priorities, and I did. But I still feel it's inadaquate, and so I'm now pondering the question: "what else should I be doing?".
