Activistenschip Madleen aangekomen in Israëlische haven Asjdod
Het activistenschip de Madleen is aangekomen in de haven van Asjdod. Het schip met pro-Palestijnse activisten en hulpgoederen was onderweg naar Gaza, maar werd vannacht tegengehouden door het Israëlische leger.
Vanuit Asjdod worden de opvarenden waarschijnlijk naar een detentiecentrum gebracht en ondervraagd, voor ze worden gedeporteerd, zeggen Israëlische functionarissen. De Israëlische minister van Defensie liet vandaag weten dat hij wil dat de opvarenden beelden bekijken van de aanval van Hamas op 7 oktober 2023.
Het schip werd vannacht in internationale wateren geënterd door Israël. Israëlische militairen zouden het schip zijn opgegaan toen het zich op volle zee bevond. Volgens de Freedom Flotilla Coalition, de organisatie achter het schip, was de Madleen 200 kilometer verwijderd van de kust van Gaza. Mensenrechtenorganisaties spreken daarom van een schending van het zeerecht.
"Lastige zaak voor Israël"
Volgens het zeerecht hebben staten op internationale wateren geen jurisdictie en mogen ze dus niet een schip betreden, al zijn er uitzonderingen. "Het is aan de rechter om te bepalen of het handelen van Israël een schending van het zeerecht is, maar het lijkt mij dat dit een heel lastige zaak is voor Israël", zegt Ben Bekkering, viceadmiraal buiten dienst. "Landen mogen besluiten om schepen op volle zee aan te houden als er verdenking is van zeeroof of slavenhandel. Dat lijkt me hier niet het geval."
Er is nog een uitzondering, zegt Bekkering. Een land mag een schip dat de vlag van datzelfde land voert laten onderzoeken. Als een schip de vlag van een ander land voert mag dat alleen met toestemming van de vlaggenstaat, de rederij en de kapitein, tenzij het land kan aantonen dat de vlag slechts een dekmantel is en alles in het schip zelf van het land zelf is. Ook daar lijkt in dit geval geen sprake van te zijn.
Nederlandse kapitein
De Madleen vertrok vorige week vanuit Italië met twaalf pro-Palestijnse activisten en een kleine voorraad aan hulpgoederen aan boord. Onder de opvarenden waren de bekende Zweedse activist Greta Thunberg en de Frans-Palestijnse Europarlementariër Rima Hassan. De kapitein van het schip was de Nederlander Mark van Rennes.
NGO's en politici veroordeelden vandaag het Israëlische optreden. Spanje riep de Israëlische gezant in het land op het matje. Ook Nederlandse politici spraken zich uit. "De schending van het zeerecht door Israël moet hard worden veroordeeld en kan niet onbestraft blijven", schreef Kamerlid Kati Piri van GroenLinks-PvdA op sociale media. "Een directe schending van het zeerecht, een scheepskaping", schreef D66-Kamerlid Jan Paternotte op X.
Bekkering: "Het tegenhouden van het schip past wel bij het Israëlisch beleid: Israël stopt alle internationale hulp, dus dan ga je deze hulp ook niet binnenlaten". Het is niet voor het eerst dat activisten via zee een Israëlische blokkade proberen te verbreken. Een aantal keer lukte dit, maar sinds 2010 zijn dergelijke pogingen tegengehouden door Israël.
Eerdere pogingen
In 2010 viel Israël een vloot van zes schepen aan van de Gaza Freedom Flotilla. Negen opvarenden werden toen gedood, tientallen andere raakten gewond. Een van hen overleed later aan de verwondingen.
"Van wat ik nu zie en lees handelt Israël op een heel andere manier dan toen", zegt Bekkering. Hij verwacht dat Israël de activisten zo snel mogelijk op het vliegtuig zal zetten en laten terugkeren naar hun land.
Het Israëlische ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken noemde het activistenschip meermaals een "selfiejacht". Een woordvoerder van de Israëlische regering sprak vandaag van "instagram activisme" en zei dat de "magere vracht" aan hulpgoederen van het schip naar Gaza gestuurd zal worden.
Bekkering verwacht dat de "strijd om het narratief" de komende dagen zal voortduren. "Het juridische spel zal enige tijd duren en de morele component staat in het hele conflict al onder druk."

I found this conversation fascinating (as a nerd) but I was also thinking, what is a non-techie/nerd who’s getting into bitcoin going to think of all this, just to send bitcoin faster non-custodied (even that I feel is a learning curve in itself). Still though incredible work, and thank you.
