Alternatively, Olive is very promising but last time I checked was on a more or less early stage of development. If you're not afraid of difficult UI, Blender VSE is VERY powerful, but has a steep learning curve.
Dealing with variable framerates is an issue and converting everything to the same frame rate might be the best option. KDEnlive and other programs can create proxy files to demand less processing power.
