As a fellow GWOT ground-pounder, this hits dead-on. What your buddy said … “that shit is like poison dude, you gotta get it out” is the exact medicine most of us avoid taking.
Sebastian Junger nailed this when he said the problem isn’t the vets, it’s that “modern society is so alienating and fragmented that returning to it feels like a betrayal of the unity we had in war.”
He’s also said, “If you want to make a warrior suffer, isolate him.”
That open line of communication, especially with those who never wore the uniform is the only path back. Not to fix us, but to fix the gap between the world we came from and the one we came home to.
