Bitcoin consumes around 176 TWh per year, accounting for over 90% of all Proof-of-Work crypto energy usage, far more than the combined 17–20 TWh used by Dogecoin, Monero, Litecoin, and roughly a dozen others. It uses an algorithm called SHA-256, which isn’t wasteful. It scales with demand, meaning the more people value Bitcoin, the more energy is committed to securing it. This combination of Proof-of-Work and SHA-256 forms a one-two punch of digital security, making Bitcoin’s blockchain globally distributed, tamper-resistant, and built to defend value at scale.
